Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell made a stop at Belleview (Fla.) High on Friday to inform four-star offensive tackle Michael Tarquin of an offer from the Tigers.
Tarquin, a highly regarded recruit in the 2019 class, spoke with The Clemson Insider shortly after Clemson offered.
“It meant a lot,” he said. “I love Clemson. It’s huge. Definitely meant a lot.”
Tarquin said he has communicated with Caldwell for over a year.
“He loves my size, athleticism,” Tarquin said. “He said that he really wants me.”
The 6-foot-5, 290-pounder visited Clemson for the Orange & White spring game in 2016 and also competed at the Dabo Swinney Camp last summer.
He has much respect for Caldwell and the job head coach Dabo Swinney has done.
“Coach Swinney seems like a great coach, and I love coach Caldwell as well,” Tarquin said. “Great program. Coach Swinney has done a lot with it. Obviously they just won a national championship. They’re doing a lot of great things.”
Tarquin is also fond of Clemson freshman offensive tackle Blake Vinson, a fellow Florida native.
“I’ve known Blake for a few years now,” Tarquin said. “He’s really helped me out with football, and I’ve worked out with him a lot. He’s been a good friend of mine for a while.”
Tarquin owns other offers from Arizona State, Auburn, Florida Atlantic, Iowa State, Louisville, Miami, Michigan, Mississippi State, Ohio State, South Carolina, South Florida and Texas A&M.
Tarqin said he is hearing the most from Auburn, Clemson, Miami, Michigan, Ohio State and South Carolina.
He doesn’t claim any leaders or currently have a timeframe for his college choice.
“I’m loving all of them. I’m just taking it all in right now,” Tarquin said. “Very happy to be in this position.”
What factors will he prioritize when making his decision in the future?
“What’s going to be important is the coaching staff, how I like the coaches,” he said. “Academics, definitely that’s a big factor, and just how I like the campus and the school overall.”
Tarquin plans to visit Clemson again this summer, potentially next month.
He is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 13 offensive tackle and No. 104 overall prospect in the 2019 class.
