A number of ACC programs are targeting 2019 linebacker Drake Thomas, and on Sunday, the Wake Forest (N.C.) Heritage standout added an offer from the defending ACC and national champions.
“It feels great since they were the best team in the country,” Thomas said of the offer in an interview with The Clemson Insider.
Thomas is looking to check out Clemson in person after picking up the offer.
“I definitely want to go visit,” he said.
Thomas fits the mold of linebacker that Brent Venables, his main recruiter, has been known to go after.
The 6-foot-1, 225-pounder is a tackling machine and racked up 126 tackles, five sacks, three forced fumbles and two interceptions as a sophomore last season.
“I fly around the field and have a high motor,” Thomas said of his strengths as a player. “I can make plays sideline to sideline.”
Thomas picked up his first power conference offers from Michigan and N.C. State last December. His recruitment picked up steam in the spring when he collected ACC offers from Duke, North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest along with other offers from Houston, Maryland and West Virginia.
Thomas has an idea of when he hopes to commit but no concrete timetable for his future decision.
“I’d like to do it before my senior season starts,” he said, “but when I know where I want to go, that’s when I’ll make my decision.”
Thomas isn’t claiming any leaders in his recruitment right now.
“At this point I don’t really have a list,” he said.
However, Clemson figures to be a strong contender moving forward.
“They have a lot of great things going on right now there and are a great program,” Thomas said.
ESPN ranks Thomas as the No. 4 inside linebacker and No. 283 overall prospect in the class of 2019.
Thomas also saw some action at running back last season and recorded 336 yards and a touchdown on 57 carries.
