Clemson vs. Florida State Series
Florida State has a 20-10 advantage in the series with Clemson that dates to 1970, a 38-13 Florida State win in Tallahassee. While Florida State has the decisive all-time lead in the series, Clemson has an 8-6 advantage over the last 14 games. Clemson had a five-game winning streak in the series at home
prior to 2013 when Florida State won, 51-14. The home team has won 12 of the last 15 games. Since 2003, Clemson won at Florida State in 2006 and 2016. Florida State’s only win at Clemson since 2001 was in 2013. So two of the last three times the visiting has won, that visiting team has gone on
to win the National Championship.
•Each of the last eight years the winner of the Clemson vs. Florida State game has gone on to win the Atlantic Division Championship. Each of the last six years the winner of this game has won the ACC Championship.
That includes each of the last two years by the Tigers.
•In 2003, Clemson upset a thirdranked Florida State team by a 26-10 score
in a nationally televised Saturday night game at Death Valley. Florida State was coming off a 37-0 win at Notre Dame and Clemson was coming off a 45-17 loss at Wake Forest.
Victory Clinches Atlantic Division
A Clemson victory Saturday will give Clemson a 7-1 record in the ACC and the championship of the Atlantic Division. It would give Clemson a third straight division title and sixth in the nine full seasons Dabo Swinney has been the Tigers head coach. It would also mean Clemson would play for the ACC championship for the fifth time in Dabo Swinney’s tenure.
Clemson won the Atlantic Division in 2009, his first full season as head coach, but lost to Georgia Tech in the championship game, 39-34 in the only game in Clemson history that both teams did not punt. The Tigers won the Atlantic Division again in 2011 on the way to winning the ACC Championship with a 38-10 win over Virginia Tech. The Tigers and Florida State both had 7-1 records to share the Atlantic Division in 2012, but Florida State went to the ACC title game because they defeated Clemson in the regular season matchup.
In 2015, Clemson had a perfect 8-0 mark to win the Atlanta and defeated North Carolina to win the Championship. Last year Clemson and Louisville both finished with 7-1 records, but the Tigers went to the ACC Championship by virtue of a 42-36 win over Louisville in the regular season. The Tigers went on to defeat Virginia Tech for Swinney’s third ACC title, giving Clemson ACC Championships in back to back years since winning three in a row from 1986-88.
Tigers Have Three 500-Yard Rushers
Clemson has three players who are already over 500 yards rushing. This is the first time since 1991 Clemson has had three 500-yard rushers in a season. So far this year, quarterback Kelly Bryant has 548, Tavien Feaster has 529 and Travis Etienne has 520. As a team, Clemson has 1982 yards rushing in nine games, an average of 220.2.
The last time Clemson averaged over 220 yards a game on the ground was 2015 when the Tigers averaged 223. But, before that you have to go back to the 2000 season.
Feaster and Etienne have been quite a combination of late. For the year they have 1049 yards in 146 carries and 11 touchdowns. That is a per carry figure of 7.2 per carry. As a team, Clemson has a 5.2 average per carry. Clemson
has not averaged at least five yards a carry since 2006 when the Tigers
averaged 5.7 with James Davis and C.J. Spiller in the backfield.
