Clemson recruiting roundup: Latest news and notes

The Clemson Insider rounds up the latest recruiting news and notes surrounding the Tigers:

Highly touted teammates get visit from Scott. Clemson co-offensive coordinator Jeff Scott stopped by Frederica Academy in Saint Simons Island, Ga., on Tuesday to check up on a pair of targets in the 2019 class.

Five-star wide receiver Jashawn Sheffield and four-star defensive back Jaylin Simpson — both of whom (pictured above) have offers from Clemson — thanked Scott via Twitter for coming by.

Sheffield and Simpson account for around three dozen scholarship offers between them.

Sheffield (6-2, 175) received an offer from Clemson when he was a freshman in 2016 and has consistently cited Clemson among his top schools since.

Simpson (5-11, 165) was offered by Clemson in August and visited for the Auburn game in September. After announcing a top five of Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, Miami and Ohio State last month, Simpson told TCI that the Tigers were his leader.

Scott also attended a game at Frederica Academy in October to watch Simpson and Sheffield compete. Both players are ranked among the top-200 prospects in their class regardless of position.

Coaches on the road. Scott isn’t the only Clemson coach hitting the recruiting trail hard this week. The NCAA contact period began last week and runs through Dec. 16, so the Tigers are busy visiting some of the nation’s best fresh off a third straight ACC Championship.

Clemson defensive line coach Todd Bates made a trip to Islands High in Savannah, Ga., on Tuesday to check up on 2019 linebacker Kalen DeLoach. DeLoach (6-1, 205) visited Clemson for The Citadel game last month and has power conference offers from South Carolina and West Virginia.

Clemson offensive line coach Robbie Caldwell dropped off an offer to Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier 2020 offensive tackle Paris Johnson Jr. on Monday during a visit to his school. Johnson Jr. (6-7, 260) has other offers from Michigan State, Rutgers, Cincinnati and Toledo. St. Xavier is the same school Clemson freshman offensive lineman Matt Bockhorst attended.

Miami (Fla.) Northwestern 2018 three-star cornerback Nigel Bethel was paid a visit by Clemson co-defensive backs coach Mike Reed on Monday. Bethel (6-0, 165) committed to Florida in November. His offer sheet includes Georgia, Louisville, Miami and others.

Scott also visited Oakleaf High in Orange Park, Fla., on Tuesday and extended offers to 2020 teammates Chantz Williams and Jalen Rivers. Both Williams (6-4, 212), a defensive end, and Rivers (6-5, 325), an offensive lineman, competed at the Dabo Swinney Camp in June and visited Clemson this season. The two claim more than two dozen offers combined and are considered a couple of the top prospects in their class.

New Clemson target de-commits from Florida. Homestead (Fla.) South Dade 2019 four-star athlete Tyrique Stevenson de-committed from Florida on Tuesday. He had been a Gators pledge since April.

Stevenson (6-1, 175) reported an offer from Clemson on Monday. He also cites offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia and Miami among others. Stay tuned as TCI will have more on him in the near future.
