Thursday Baseball Scrimmage Report

The purple squad defeated the orange squad 9-8 Thursday on a beautiful afternoon for baseball at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. 

The orange team got on the board first with a run in the top of the first inning. Brad Miller had a one-out single and was followed by another single up the middle from Jeff Schaus. Spencer Kieboom singled to score Miller and give the orange squad a 1-0 lead. 

The purple squad answered with two runs in the bottom of the first. Will Lamb drew a two-out walk and Phil Pohl followed with a two-run shot to the left-centerfield bleachers to put the purple team up 2-1. 

The orange tied the game with a single run in the second inning. Freshman Joe Costigan lead off with a triple and later scored on a single by fellow freshman Jon Surber. 

The purple again took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Chris Epps lead off the inning with a walk. Following a sacrifice bunt by Kevin Caughman, Epps stole third base and later scored on a passed ball to give the purple a 3-2 lead after three innings. 

The orange squad answered with a bang to start off the fourth inning. Richie Shaffer and Spencer Kieboom each hit homers off purple starter Lamb to take a 4-3 lead. 

The purple tied the game again with some help from the orange defense in the fifth inning. Epps lead off the inning with a walk, and moved to second on an error by freshman pitcher Kevin Pohle. Following an infield single by Lamb, Pohl hit a deep sacrifice fly to centerfield to tie the game at four. 

The orange squad put three runs on the board in the top of the seventh. Mike Dunster lead off the inning with a double and moved to third on a sinlge by Surber. Jake Fletcher reached on an error and Dunster scored on the play. Later in the inning, Miller stroked a double to right-center and gave the orange a 7-4 lead. 

The purple responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Caughman and Lamb lead off the inning with consecutive singles. John Hinson, fresh in the game since arriving late from class, came in and hit a double down the left-field line to score both guys and cut the orange lead to 7-6.

The purple took the lead in the bottom of the eighth. Steve Wilkerson and Jay Cox lead off the inning by both being hit-by-pitches and Epps walked. Following a wild pitch to score Wilkerson, Cox scored on a sacrifice fly by Lamb to give the purple a 8-7 lead going to the ninth inning. 

In the top of the ninth, Fletcher opened the inning by reaching on an error. Following a sacrifice by Dominic Attanasio and a flyout by Miller, Jeff Schaus hit a triple down the right-field line to tied the game.

 In the bottom of the ninth, Pohl lead off with a single. Jason Stolz attempted to bunt Pohl over, but was unsuccessful. After Stolz moved up to second on a wild pitch, freshman Jonathan McGibbon hit a single up the middle to score Stolz and give the purple a 9-8 walk-off win. 

For the game, the orange team was lead by several players with two hits. The players were Miller, Schaus, Kieboom, Costigan, and Surber. The purple were lead by Lamb, Pohl, and McGibbon all with two hits.
