Clemson held their second fall scrimmage Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore. In the second game of a three game series the Orange and Purple teams tied 6-6.
The purple squad opened the scoring in the top of the first inning. Chris Epps led off with a single and stole second base. After a groundout moved Epps to third, Will Lamb grounded out to second base to score Epps and give the purple an early 1-0 lead.
The orange responded in the bottom half of the first. Brad Miller had a one-out double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Jeff Schaus then grounded out to second to score Miller and tie the game.
The game remained tied until the orange squad had a big inning in the bottom of the third. Jake Fletcher singled to start the inning and moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt. Two batters later, Miller hit his second double of the game to score Fletcher. Schaus then followed with a single to left to score Miller. After a pitch hit Richie Shaffer, the orange squad executed a perfect double steal to put runners on second and third for Spencer Kieboom. Kieboom had a sacrifice fly to deep right to score Schaus and put the orange team up 4-1 after three innings of play.
The orange scored two more runs in the top of the fourth inning. Mike Dunster and Jon Surber lead off with consecutive singles and purple starter Scott Firth hit Fletcher to load the bases with no outs. Dominic Attanasio bounced a single up the middle to plate both runs and chase Firth from the game. Dale Innes then came in and sit down the next three batters to keep the orange lead at 6-1 going to the fifth inning.
Jay Cox lead off the fifth inning with a single, his second hit of the game. Following a walk to Chris Epps, Kevin Caughman hit into a fielder’s choice that moved Cox to third. Will Lamb reached on an error and Cox scored on the play to cut the orange lead to 6-2.
The Purple team tied the game with four runs in the top of the eighth. The game was called after eight innings with the score tied 6-6.
Jonathan Meyer continued his pitching effort from the summer with five strong innings for the range squad. He allowed only three hits and two walks with one strikeout in the 20 batters he faced.
The purple squad was lead at the plate by Cox, who was 2-2. Epps was 1-2 with a stolen base, while Will Lamb had 2 RBI.
The orange was lead at the plate by Miller with two doubles and an RBI. Schaus and Attanasio each had a hit and 2 RBI each as well.
The Tigers will complete the fall scrimmages with the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon at 1:00PM.
