Clemson (5-1), ranked as high as #4 in the nation, hosts the Wofford Terriers on Wednesday afternoon at 4:00PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Clemson and Wofford have met 99 times on the diamond, with the Tigers holding a 75-23-1 lead in the series. The first meeting in the series took place in 1898 with the last meeting during the 2009 season. This game will mark only the 13th meeting since the teams stopped playing a home-and-home series in 1949, however last season stopped a 10-year run in which the teams played a single game against each other. The Tigers lead the series 38-8 at Clemson and are 8-0 all-time against the Terriers at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Wofford, led by fourth-year Head Coach Todd Interdonato, is a member of the Southern Conference. They are 6-2 on the season. The Terriers are coming off a 8-7 11-inning win over USC Upstate on Tuesday. Wofford was picked to finish ninth in the SoCon by both the coaches and the media and is coming off a 17-38 (9-21 SoCon) season in 2010.
On the season, the Terriers are hitting .355 as a team with 19 doubles, five triples, three homers, 35 walks, and 35 strikeouts while scoring 64 runs in eight games. Konstantine Diamaduros leads Wofford at the plate batting .485 with one double, eight RBI, and four stolen bases. Clark Wise is hitting .409, while James Foster is at .4096 and leads the team with six doubles.
The Wofford pitching staff has a 4.12 ERA this season allowing 88 hits and 26 walks against 60 strikeouts in 72.0 inning. Cash Collins (2-0) leads the staff and has a 1.69 ERA with 18 hits and two walks with four strikeouts in 16.0 innings. John Cornely has a staff-high nine strikeouts and a save, while Bobby Streisel has a team-high four appearances.
Clemson enters the game 5-1 and ranked as high as #4 in the nation (Collegiate Baseball). The Tigers are also ranked #7 (Sports Weekly) and #12 (Baseball America) and are coming off a 3-0 showing in the First Pitch Invitational. The Tigers outscored Cincinnati, Charleston Southern, and Michigan State 42-5 while hitting .405 and holding the three opponents to a .160 batting average. Clemson totaled 23 walks, four hit-by-pitches, and 10 stolen bases on the weekend. The Tiger pitching staff had a 1.33 ERA with five walks against 23 strikeouts.
Sophomore Spencer Kieboom leads the Tigers at the plate as he is batting .579 with 10 RBI, while Jason Stolz and Phil Pohl are each hitting .438. John Hinson is batting .391 with two doubles, one triple, and one homer. Brad Miller leads the team in walks (9), while Richie Shaffer has eight walks. Chris Epps, the top Tiger in homers with two, and Miller are both 4-4 on stolen bases.
The Tiger pitching staff has a 2.50 ERA and has allowed only 38 hits and 11 walks with 49 strikeouts in 54.0 innings. Kevin Brady is 2-0 allowing only six hits and one walk with 19 strikeouts in 12.1 innings. Scott Weismann (2-0) and David Haselden (1-0 with a save) have each thrown 10.0 innings. The Tiger bullpen is anchored by righty Alex Frederick (one walk and four Ks in 1.2 IP) and lefty Will Lamb (4 Ks in 1.2 IP).

Wofford’s starter has yet to be determined.
Clemson will start senior co-captain righty Justin Sarratt. The Gaffney, SC native is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two appearances in 2011. In 2.0 innings pitched, he has allowed one hit (.125 opponents’ batting average) with no walks and no strikeouts.
- This will be Wofford’s first road game of the season. The Terriers were 4-20 on their opponent’s home field last season.
- Clemson is 14-9-1 all-time on March 2, including a 11-3 mark at home.
- Head Coach Jack Leggett is 17-2 all-time against Wofford. He is 10-0 as the head coach at Clemson and was 7-2 while he was in charge at Western Carolina.
- Clemson is 999-242 all-time record in the 32 seasons it has played at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Clemson vs. the SoCon
- This is the first of eight games against SoCon opponents in 2011. The Tigers travel to Western Carolina (March 9), host Elon for two games (March 22-23), host Western Carolina (April 6), host Furman (April 26), travel to Fluor Field to face Furman (May 10), and wrap up the home schedule with Davidson (May 17).
