Clemson (14-12) hosts Coastal Carolina on Tuesday at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in a 6:30PM contest. 

The Series

Clemson and Coastal Carolina have met 45 times on the diamond, with the Tigers holding a 38-7 lead in the series. The teams first played in 1986 and have met at least once in all but two seasons since then. The Tigers lead the series 28-5 in games at Clemson, all of which have occurred at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Before Coastal Carolina won 4-3 in 11 innings last season, the Tigers had won the previous seven games between the schools. Included in that streak were wins of 11-8 and 15-3 over the host and 10th-ranked Chanticleers in the 2007 Myrtle Beach Regional. 

The Chanticleers

Coastal Carolina, led by 16th-year Head Coach Gary Gilmore, is a member of the Big South Conference. The Chanticleers are 18-10 (4-2 Big South) on the season including a 5-5 mark away from home. Coastal Carolina enters the game off a weekend series sweep of Liberty in which they outscored the Flames 27-9. The Chanticleers were a unanimous choice to win the Big South by the league’s coaches and have won four consecutive league titles. They are coming off a 55-10 (25-0 Big South) record, Myrtle Beach Super Regional appearances, and a final season ranking of #11 in 2010. 

On the season, the Chanticleers are hitting .252 as a team with 46 doubles, nine triples, 20 homers, 44 stolen bases, 40 hit-by-pitches, 122 walks, and 213 strikeouts while averaging 5.8 runs per game. Junior Tommy La Stella lead Coastal Carolina at the plate batting .350 with six doubles, three triples, six homers, 24 runs, and 30 RBI. Senior Scott Woodward is hitting .337 with nine doubles, 20 walks, 12 hit-by-pitches, and a team-leading 19 stolen bases. Senior Hayes Orton is batting .306 with nine doubles and 20 RBI while junior Taylor Motter is hitting .247 with three doubles, two triples, two homers, and a team-high 22 walks. 

The Coastal Carolina pitching staff has a 2.90 ERA this season allowing 210 hits (.222 opponents’ batting average) and 90 walks against 232 strikeouts in 260.2 innings. Sophomore Josh Conway (4-0) has a 2.23 ERA with 40 strikeouts in 36.1 innings. Junior Anthony Meo (3-2) leads the team in innings (43.0) and strikeouts (44). Sophomore Ryan Connolly leads the team with 14 appearances and two saves while junior Jordan Coons has 12 appearances and two saves. 

The Tigers

Clemson enters the game 14-12 and are coming off a series sweet at #6 North Carolina this past weekend. The Tigers are 21-4 at home this season. 

The Tigers are hitting .314 as a team with 49 doubles, seven triples, 15 homers, 36 stolen bases, 27 hit-by-pitches, 141 walks, and 175 strikeouts while averaging 7.2 runs per game. Junior Phil Pohl leads the Tigers at the plate batting .417 with nine doubles, two homers, six hit-by-pitches, and 17 RBI. Sophomore Spencer Kieboom is hitting .406 with three doubles, 12 walks, and 17 RBI while junior Brad Miller is batting .333 with 20 walks and five stolen bases. Sophomore Richie Shaffer is hitting .330 with three doubles, one triple, four homers, and 19 RBI while leading the team in runs (31) and walks (22). Senior Jeff Schuas, who is batting .323, has nine doubles and 18 walks with a team-high 22 RBI. Senior Chris Epps leads the team in homers (5) while redshirt junior John Hinson leads the team in stolen bases (7). 

The Clemson pitching staff has a 3.87 ERA this season allowing 212 hits (.244 opponents’ batting average) and 82 walks against 198 strikeouts in 227.2 innings. Junior David Haselden (1-1) has a save in 10 appearances (four starts) in 30.0 innings, while redshirt sophomore Kevin Brady has a team-leading 23 strikeouts in only 16.1 innings. Graduate Justin Sarratt (1-1) has a 2.05 ERA and 23 strikeouts in 22.0 innings over eight appearances (three starts). Redshirt senior Alex Frederick has two saves in a team-high 13 appearances while redshirt sophomore Joseph Moorefield has made 12 appearances.

Projected Starting Pitchers

Coastal Carolina will start junior lefthander Keith Hessler. The Silver Spring, MD native is 1-0 with a 3.21 ERA in 11 relief appearances in 2011. In 14.0 innings, he has allowed 11 hits (.212 opponents’ batting average) and eight walks against 13 strikeouts. 

Clemson will counter with redshirt graduate righthander Justin Sarratt. The Gaffney, SC native is 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA in eight appearances (three starts) in 2011. In 22.0 innings, he has allowed 20 hits (.238 opponents’ batting average) and three walks against 23 strikeouts. 

Worth Noting

  • Jack Leggett is 25-5 all-time against the Chanticleers with all 30 games coming as Clemson’s head coach. Leggett is 21-4 against Coastal Carolina in games at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
  • Clemson is 35-22 all-time on March 29, including a 25-11 mark at home.
  • All-time, Leggett is 104-21 all-time against teams currently in the Big South. Leggett is 54-12 as Clemson’s head coach after compiling a 50-9 record against the Big South at Western Carolina.
  • The Coastal Carolina game is the third of seven games against teams from the Big South for Clemson in 2011. The Tigers will host Presbyterian College (April 12), Gardner-Webb (DH on May 7) and travel to Gardner-Webb (May 8).
  • Clemson is 149-34 all-time against teams currently in the Big South Conference, including 106-17 against those same teams in games at Clemson.
