Frank Spaziani, the Head Football Coach at Boston College believes that his team has improved greatly over the spring, especially the younger players who have really gotten a chance to show what they can and cannot do.
“Finding out what our younger players could do was a major goal this spring,” Spaziani said. “We certainly had a lot of players improve, and coaches will tell you that we would have liked them to improve more and faster, but we did have a group that improved.”
As for Boston College’s new Offensive Coordinator Kevin Rogers, Spaziani believes that the move to a new offensive system was the right one.
“We were productive in the sense that we were able to implement our new system,” Spaziani said. “We’re starting to move forward with it however I have to say we still have a lot of work to do in a lot of areas.”
Now that the quarterback position is a little more stable this season, with Chase Rettig as the incumbent, after he started the last 7 or 8 games, Spaziani has now moved onto another depth concern, the wide receiver position.
“There’s absolutely a question mark at wide receiver,” Spaziani said. “We have Ifeanyi Momah, who played a lot for us last year; he’s a convert over there. He had a productive spring and has gotten better. We also have three freshmen that played for us last year along with redshirt freshmen and true freshmen, who all continue to improve.”
Spaziani’s only hope at wide receiver is that the Eagle’s receiver Colin Larmond, who was considered the number one receiver going into camp last season, will be healthy enough to play this summer. Spaziani hopes that Larmond who suffered a serious knee injury and couldn’t play last season will have a productive season in 2011.
As for Montel Harris, the Eagle’s star running back who injured himself late into the season, Spaziani believes that he’s medically on pace to return at the beginning of the season however there have been a few lingering issues this spring surrounding his return.
What would it mean to get this difference maker back on the gridiron to start off the 2011 season?
“He’s been a difference maker from the day he came in and started playing his freshman year,” Spaziani said. “I don’t know where we’d be record wise without Montel’s production, and certainly the two years that I’ve been head coach here he’s carried us several times. He’s very important for us and we need to get him back on track.”
When Harris does return for the Eagles, he only needs 1003 more yards in order to break a 33 year old record for career rushing in the ACC and Spaziani would be thrilled for his star back to break the record.
