Second year Head Football Coach at Florida State, Jimbo Fisher couldn’t be happier with the progress made by his team during spring practice. Although a few Seminoles got banged up during the spring, Fisher is confident that they will all be healthy in time for fall camp.
“I was very encouraged by what I saw this spring,” Fisher said. “We’re building depth and I think we’ll have a great summer and great fall to have a chance at having a successful season.”
Although the Seminoles have faced a few injuries on the offensive line, Fisher still believes that Florida State has a very talented defense.
“It’s hard to judge our offensive and defensive performances this spring due to injuries,” Fisher said. “But we’ve been able to give some of the younger guys a chance to play which has been good. I don’t put a lot of weight into the spring game though; I just like the situation of having a large crowd, and seeing how our guys will react under pressure.”
And in the quarterback position, although he has had more game-time experience than Clemson’s first year quarterback Tajh Boyd, Florida State is relying on first year starter E.J. Manuel to bring the Seminoles back to the ACC Championship game. How much pressure does Manuel put on himself to fill the shoes of Christian Ponder?
“I think he’s always putting pressure on himself,” Fisher said. “That’s just E.J.’s nature, but I don’t think its pressure that he can’t handle, or things that he knows that he can do. I say that he can revert back to that I have done this before and been very successful.”
Fisher expects Manuel to push himself and challenge himself even harder than Fisher does.
“EJ is harder on himself than I have ever been,” Fisher said. “But I think he had an exceptional spring, He is accurate, runs well and has a great command of the offense. I wouldn’t be shocked if he had a very successful season.”
Although there have been several injuries during the spring for Fisher’s Seminoles, he still believes that Florida State has a great chance to win the ACC Championship this season and hopefully win a National Championship as well.
What is Fisher’s definition of a successful season?
“There’s no certain wins I don’t think,” Fisher said. “I think it’s for the team to reach its maximum potential. Achieve some things that maybe they weren’t supposed to achieve. I don’t like to put numbers and wins and things like that on it, I just want our team to go out there and be the best team that they can be.”
