Clemson (29-15, 11-10 ACC), ranked as high as #16 in the nation, will step outside of ACC play this weekend for a unique series with Gardner-Webb. Saturday the two teams will play a 2:00PM doubleheader at Doug Kingsmore Stadium before a single 2:00PM contest at Gardner-Webb on Sunday. 

The Series

Clemson and Gardner-Webb have met five times on the diamond, with the Tigers holding a 5-0 lead in the series. The teams first met in 1975 and did not play again until 2004. The teams also met for single games in 2006, 2007, and 2010. In the 2010 meeting, the Tigers won 13-2 and have outscored the Runnin’ Bulldogs 54-20 in the five meetings. All the previous meetings between the two teams have occurred in Clemson. 

The Runnin’ Bulldogs

Gardner-Webb, led by ninth-year Head Coach Rusty Stroupe, is a member of the Big South Conference. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are 28-14-1 (12-9 Big South) on the season. They are 16-7 at home, 10-6-1 on the road, and 2-1 in neutral sites. Gardner-Webb enters the game off a 8-1 loss at North Carolina on Tuesday, but had won eight games in a row prior to that. The Runnin’ Bulldogs were picked to finish seventh in the Big South by league coaches and are coming off a 25-30 (10-17 Big South) record in 2010. 

On the season, the Runnin’ Bulldogs are hitting .320 as a team with 101 doubles, eight triples, 21 homers, 56 stolen bases, 30 hit-by-pitches, 182 walks, and 291 strikeouts while averaging 7.8 runs per game. Redshirt junior Dusty Quattlebaum leads Gardner-Webb at the plate batting .366 with 23 doubles, four homers, 33 runs, and 41 RBI. Junior Adam McFarland is hitting .348 with 14 doubles, one triple, four homers, and 43 RBI while senior Daniel Merck is at .339 with nine doubles, four homers, 10 stolen bases, and leads the team in runs (46) and walks (34). Junior Jake Watts is batting .337 with 12 doubles and a team-high 44 RBI while sophomore John Harris is hitting .333 with 11 doubles and 30 RBI. Senior Aaron Miller leads the team with 13 stolen bases. 

The Gardner-Webb pitching staff has a 5.41 ERA this season allowing 426 hits (.288 opponents’ batting average) and 189 walks against 270 strikeouts in 384.0 innings. Sophomore closer Jeff Howell (3-1, 2.76 ERA) has six saves in 32.2 innings over 24 appearances and leads the team with 39 strikeouts. Freshman Erik Heiligenstadt (3-3) has stated a team-leading 11 games (14 appearances) and also leads the team with 50.1 innings pitched. Sophomore Brock Wilson is 4-1 in 17 appearances (two starts), while sophomore Conner Scarborough (6-2) leads the team with six wins in 12 appearances (nine starts). Senior Brett Stackhouse has a team-high 25 appearances, while junior Adam Izokovic has made 21 appearances. 

The Tigers

Clemson enters the game 29-15 and are coming off a series win over #9 Georgia Tech last weekend.

The Tigers are 22-7 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in 2011, while posting a 6-6 record on opponents’ home fields. 

The Tigers are hitting .308 as a team with 89 doubles, 13 triples, 26 homers, 80 stolen bases, 35 hit-by-pitches, 211 walks, and 281 strikeouts while averaging 6.8 runs per game. Junior Brad Miller leads Clemson at the plate batting .437 with eight doubles, three triples, two homers, 28 walks, 32 RBI, and is tied for the team-lead with 18 stolen bases. Junior Phil Pohl is hitting .360 with 15 doubles, four homers, and 29 RBI with sophomore Spencer Kieboom is at .316 with eight doubles, one homer, and 24 RBI. Sophomore Richie Shaffer is batting .307 with 11 doubles, two triples, while tying for the team-high with five homers and RBI (32) and leading the team in walks (31) and runs (46). Will Lamb is batting .307 with seven doubles, three triples, a homer, and 10 stolen bases while senior Jeff Schaus is batting .298 with 12 doubles, two homers, 31 RBI, and 29 walks. Senior Chris Epps also has five homers while redshirt junior John Hinson also has five homers with 18 stolen bases. 

The Clemson pitching staff has a 3.37 ERA this season allowing 337 hits (.233 opponents’ batting average) and 133 walks against 339 strikeouts in 389.2 innings. Graduate Justin Sarratt (5-1 with a 1.89 ERA) leads the team in wins and has only six walks against 41 strikeouts in 52.1 innings while junior David Haselden (4-1 with two saves) has a 2.43 ERA in a team-high 59.1 innings over 18 appearances (four starts). Sophomore Jonathan Meyer (4-1 with a save) has a 3.06 ERA in 18 appearances (three starts) and leads the team in strikeouts (48) while holding opponents to a .198 batting average. Junior Scott Weismann (3-4) is the team’s closer with four saves and has 42 strikeouts in 48.1 innings. Freshman Kevin Pohle (3-1) has a 1.86 ERA in 12 appearances while redshirt senior Alex Frederick has three saves in 18 appearances.

Projected Starting Pitchers

In game one, Gardner-Webb will start senior lefthander Kyle Paeplow. The Fairview, NC native is 3-1 with a 5.63 ERA in nine starts in 2011. In 46.1 innings, he has allowed 65 hits (.339 opponents’ batting average) and 11 walks against 26 strikeouts. 

Clemson will counter with sophomore righthander Dominic Leone. The Norwich, CT native is 3-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 10 appearances (seven starts) in 2011. In 40.0 innings, he has allowed 28 hits (.199 opponents’ batting average) and 18 walks against 45 strikeouts. 

In game two, the Runnin’ Bulldogs will start freshman lefthander Eric Heiligenstadt. The Forest, VA native is 3-3 with a 5.01 ERA in 14 appearances (11 starts) in 2011. In 50.1 innings, he has allowed 61 hits (.292 opponents’ batting average) and 14 walks with 31 strikeouts. 

The Tigers will counter with sophomore righthander Jonathan Meyer. The San Diego, CA native is 4-1 with a save and a 3.06 ERA in 18 appearances (three starts) in 2011. In 47.0 innings, he has allowed 34 hits (.198 opponents’ batting average) and 15 walks against 48 strikeouts. 

In game three on Sunday at Gardner-Webb, Clemson will start graduate righthander Justin Sarratt. The Gaffney, SC native is 5-1 with a 1.89 ERA in 13 appearances (eight starts) in 2011. In 52.1 innings, he has allowed 43 hits (.222 opponents’ batting average) and six walks against 41 strikeouts. 

Gardner-Webb will counter with sophomore righthander Emilio Pagan. The Simpsonville, SC native is 3-1 with a 2.93 ERA in 12 appearances (four starts) in 2011. In 43.0 innings, he has allowed 28 hits (.196 opponents’ batting average) wand 22 walks against 26 strikeouts. 

Worth Noting

  • Jack Leggett, who has 798 wins as the head coach at Clemson, is 4-0 all-time against Gardner-Webb with all the meetings coming since 2004 at Clemson.
  • Clemson is 32-15 all-time on May 7, including a 16-5 mark at home. The Tigers are 31-28-1 all-time on May 8, including a 15-21 mark on the road.
  • Leggett is 106-21 all-time against teams currently in the Big South in his career. Leggett is 56-12 as Clemson’s head coach after compiling a 50-9 record against the Big South at Western Carolina.
  • The Gardner-Webb series will mark the final three games of the seven the Tigers have played against Big South competition in 2011.
  • Clemson is 151-33 all-time against teams currently in the Big South Conference, including 108-17 against those same teams in games at Clemson.
