Connecticut, led by eighth-year Head Coach Jim Penders, is a member of the BIG EAST Conference and is making their 17th NCAA Tournament appearance. The Huskies are 41-17-1 (22-5 BIG EAST) on the season including a 24-14 mark away from home, 20-6 on opponents’ home fields and 4-8 at neutral sites. Connecticut is coming off a 2-2 showing in the BIG EAST Tournament and won all nine BIG EAST regular-season series in 2011. The Huskies are ranked 16th by Collegiate Baseball, 18th by Baseball America, and 24th in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll. 

The Series

Clemson and Connecticut have never met on the diamond. Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett faced the Huskies nine times while the head coach at Vermont and has a 5-4 record against Connecticut. 

Clemson vs. the BIG EAST Notes

  • The Tigers are 33-7 all-time against teams currently in the BIG EAST. This mark includes a 20-4 record in Clemson and a 6-1 record against teams that were in the BIG EAST at the time of the game. Earlier this season, Clemson defeated BIG EAST member Cincinnati 15-4 in Clemson as part of the First Pitch Invitational.
  • The Tigers are 7-0 all-time against the BIG EAST in the NCAA Tournament. Clemson defeated St. John’s (NY) in 2007, Seton Hall (twice) in 2001, West Virginia in 1996, Villanova in 1991, St. John’s (NY) in 1988, and Seton Hall in 1987.
  • Clemson has hosted BIG EAST teams twice before in NCAA Tournament Regionals held at Clemson. The Tigers defeated Seton Hall 24-4 and 8-2 in 2001 and West Virginia 6-3 in 1996.

  • Including this season, 10 BIG EAST teams have combined to make 47 NCAA Tournament appearances since the conference formed in 1985.

 The Huskies

Connecticut is making its 17th appearance in the NCAA Tournament dating back to 1957. In their previous 16 trips, the Huskies have a 25-32 overall record. Connecticut has also made five appearances in the College World Series, compiling a 3-10 record. Last season, the Huskies made their first appearance in the tournament since 1994 when they hosted a regional. Connecticut went 1-2 in the regional, beating Central Connecticut State and losing two games to Oregon. 

On the season, the Huskies are hitting .306 as a team with 119 doubles, 15 triples, 32 homers, 122 stolen bases, 59 hit-by-pitches, 217 walks, and 311 strikeouts while averaging 6.3 runs per game. BIG EAST Player-of-the-Year George Springer leads Connecticut at the plate. The junior is batting .361 with 22 doubles, two triples, and 30 walks while leading the team in homers (12), RBI (74), runs (53), hit-by-pitches (18), and stolen bases (31). Senior Mike Nemeth is hitting .351 with 13 doubles, one triple, three homers, 46 RBI, and 44 runs with a team-high 44 walks. Sophomore LJ Mazzilli is batting .335 with 21 doubles, three homers, 39 runs, 11 stolen bases, and is tied for the team-lead with four triples while junior Nick Ahmed is hitting .327 with 10 doubles, two triples, two homers, 46 runs, and 21 stolen bases. Junior Ryan Fuller has a team-high 24 doubles and is tied for the team-lead with four triples along with 11 stolen bases while junior John Andreoli has 20 steals and redshirt sophomore Billy Ferriter has added 15 stolen bases. 

The Connecticut pitching staff has a 2.85 ERA this season allowing 426 hits (.223 opponents’ batting average) and 211 walks against 419 strikeouts in 530.2 innings while only allowing 17 homers. BIG EAST Pitcher-of-the-Year Matt Barnes headlines the Huskies pitching staff. The junior is 11-3 with a 1.12 ERA in 15 starts in 2011 with three complete games. He leads the team in starts, innings (112.1), and strikeouts (105) while allowing only 28 walks. Junior Kevin Vance anchors the Connecticut bullpen. The team’s closer, Vance has made a team-high 25 appearances and has a 0.98 ERA with 13 saves and 28 strikeouts in 27.2 innings while holding opponents to a .106 batting average. Senior Greg Nappo is 9-2 with a 2.71 ERA in 14 starts over 79.2 innings while freshman Brian Ward is 5-1 in 13 appearances with 51 strikeouts in 52.1 innings. Junior David Fischer (2-1 with a 1.77 ERA) has two saves in 22 appearances while sophomore Dan Feehan has made 24 appearances.
