Mills Wins Qualifier at Public Links

By Staff Report.

Clemson , SC —Clemson rising junior Corbin Mills fired a four under par 67 on Tuesday to take medalist honors of the stroke play qualifier at the 2011 US Public Links Championships.   Mills will be the number-one seed for the match play championship that begins on Wednesday with his three under par score of 138 for the 36 holes.

Mills shot his 67 at the Old Macdonald Course at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Oregon .   His score on Tuesday was the low round by any of the 155 golfers over the two days of competition.

Mills is the first Clemson golfer to win the stroke play qualifier at the US Public Links since D.J. Trahan did it in 2000.  Trahan went on to win the match play championship and is the only player to win both the US Public Links stroke play and the match play in the same year since 1993.

Mills won the stroke play by three shots over Jonathan Randolph of Brandon , MS , who had an even par 141 for the 36 holes.

The native of Anderson , SC who attended Wren High School entered the second round of stroke play in fifth place after an opening round of one over par 71.  He shot a four under par 33 on the back nine Tuesday, his first nine of the second round, to move into the lead.  Mills made four consecutive birdies on holes 13-16.  Three of the holes were on par fours and he finished the 36 holes by scoring three under par on the par four holes, a key to his victory.

Mills had one birdie and one bogey on the front nine to finish his round with the 67.  For the two rounds, Mills had eight birdies and five bogeys.  He did not have any scores over bogey for the 36 holes.

The winner of the US Public Links typically receives an invitation to the Masters.
