Mills Wins US Public Links Championship

By

Clemson’s Corbin Mills won the US Public Links Championship Sunday afternoon at the Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Brandon, OR.  Corbin defeated Derek Ernst from Clovis, CA with a par on the 37th hole.

Mills held the lead for most of the day and led by four holes with ten to go.  Ernst rallied to take the lead on the final nine.  Corbin won the 35th hole with a birdie to square the match.

On the 37th hole Mills two putted for the par while Ernst missed a ten foot par putt.

Mills joined former Tiger D.J. Trahan as the only players to win the stroke play qualifier and the match play.

“This was a big victory for Corbin,” said Clemson head Coach Larry Penley.  “He had it in him.  The biggest thing he did was improve his putting. He really improved his pace (in putting).  That should give him confidence and our entire team confidence.

“To see him hang in there after losing five straight holes on the second 18 and lose the lead was impressive.  He could have hung his head and packed it in.  But he didn’t and he got the momentum back when he made that birdie on the 15th hole to tie the match.  I am very proud of him.”
