The long wait is finally over.  Clemson opens the 2011 season in Death Valley Saturday against Troy. 

Each week TCI will take a look at how the matchup breaks down by the numbers. 

What do the numbers tell us about the Tigers and the Trojans?

3 – Number of consecutive season opener’s for Clemson against the Sun Belt and the number of Tiger players that are the sons of former Clemson football players (Landon Walker, Shaq Anthony, and DeShawn Williams). 

5 – Number of consecutive Sun Belt titles for Troy as well as number of consecutive seasons with eight or more wins for the Trojans. Also the number of wins by Clemson, against zero losses, on September 3. 

6 – Number of Tigers that were named to a total of 11 preseason Watch Lists for 2001. The players are: Andre Ellington (Maxwell, Doak Walker, and Paul Hornung), Dalton Freeman (Rimington, Outland, and Lombardi), Dawson Zimmerman (Ray Guy and Lowe’s Senior Class), Dwayne Allen (Mackey), Andre Branch (Hendricks), and DeAndre Hopkins (Biletnikoff).  

6.3 – Career yards per carry for Clemson running back Andre Ellington 

7 – Number of new members of the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame that will be inducted this weekend. The new members are Sharone Wright (men’s basketball), Shane Monahan (baseball), Jamine Moton (women’s track and field), Ingelise Driehuis (women’s tennis), Ross O’Dell (men’s track), Neil Brophy (men’s swimming), and Keith Adams (football). 

11 – Years that Troy has been a member of FBS.  

13.5 – Number of sacks by Trojan DE Jonathan Massaquoi in 2010. 

21 – Number of wins by Clemson in the Tigers last 27 season openers as well as the number of seasons Larry Blakeney has been the head coach at Troy. 

42 – Number of freshman (redshirt or first year) among the 85 scholarship players for Clemson. 

63 – Career passing attempts by Clemson quarterbacks (all by Tajh Boyd). 

116 – Number of seasons Clemson has fielded a football team.
