Wofford Enters 1-0

Young Tigers Make Early Impact

The Clemson freshmen class made an immediate impact in the season opener.  The Tigers played 70 players against Troy, 24 of them were freshmen, including 12 true freshmen.

Sammy Watkins was the first to strike with a 33 yard touchdown from Tajh Boyd on the second play from scrimmage for the Tigers.  That is the earliest a freshmen has ever scored at Clemson.  Watkins went on to catch seven passes for 81 yards.

In the second half Mike Bellamy raced 75 yards for a touchdown on the first carry of his career.

Martavis Bryant joined the fun with a 54 yard catch in the second half.

On defense Stephone Anthony had a sack and pass breakup.  Robert Smith added an interception in his first game.

Boyd Impressive in First Start

Tajh Boyd went 20-30 for 264 yards and three touchdowns in his first start.  At one point in the second half Tajh completed 13 in a row.  Boyd day had to be considered the second best game ever for a Tiger in his first start.  Charlie Whitehurst had the best ever going 34-52 for 420 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Duke in 2002.  Boyd’s 264 yards passing were the most by a Clemson quarterback in 20 games.

Catanzaro Has Career Day

Chandler Catanzaro had his best day as a Tiger against Troy.  Cat Man went 3-3 on field goals hitting from 46, 46 and 45 yards.  Catanzaro became just the second Clemson kicker to make three field goals over 45 yards in a single game.

Looking for Another 2-0 Start

Clemson seeks their 13th 2-0 start since 1971.  The Tigers also started 2-0 last year.  In the first decade of this century Clemson started 2-0 four times.
