Wales "Toney the Tiger"

As takes our baseball coverage to a new level we will introduce you to all of the current Clemson baseball commits.  First in the series is T.L. Hanna pitcher Wales Toney.  Earlier this year the star right-hander gave a commitment to the Tigers.

“I committed to Clemson in January.  I did it right before our season,” said Toney.

The 6-3, 185 pound right handed pitcher didn’t waste any time accepting an offer to be a Tiger.

“I grew up a Clemson fan.  I have always wanted to go there.  I had the opportunity to go there when I got the offer.  It was a dream come true,” said Toney.

What is Wales relationship with the Clemson staff?

“It has become really strong.  I really like all of those guys.  Coach Leggett, he’s the man.  He knows everything.  I talk with coach LeCroy a good bit.  I can’t wait to work with coach Pepicelli.  I look forward to working with them and getting in a routine and build some arm strength,” replied Toney.

Over the summer Wales played with a local team led by a former Tiger.

“I played this summer with the Blue Chip Bulls for coach Brizek.  He played at Clemson and has always been there for me.  I thank him a lot,” said Toney.

Last year Toney had a strong junior season for T.L. Hanna.

“I was 5-2 last year at Hanna.  I don’t have the ERA but I know I pitched 49 innings and had 75 strikeouts,” said Toney.

The future Tiger will be in the Valley on Saturday to watch Clemson battle Auburn.

“I am going to be there Saturday.  I know we have looked just okay so far, but so has Auburn.  It should be a good game.  We have the potential to be a really good team this year,” said Toney.

Wales other offers included College of Charleston and Western Carolina.

“I was talking to a lot of other schools.  If I hadn’t committed early I would have gotten some more offers,” said Toney.
