Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher held his Monday press conference where he discussed the loss to Oklahoma, his injuries and looked forward to Clemson.
We are finishing grading the film from last week. Looking at some of the opportunities that we should have capitalized on and had a chance to. It was very disappointing. We did some good things in that game but we had some opportunities that we should have seized on both sides of the ball and on special teams, all three phases of the game. We did some good things on all parts but moral victories are not what we are here for. We had an opportunity to win that football game and we didn’t do it. Oklahoma is a great team and our hats are off to them.
Now we have to put that one behind us and move on and get ready to play. Clemson is going to be a great environment for them. They are playing well. They have a good football team, offense, defense and special teams. It is going to be a great challenge to go on the road and get a W. We are going to have our hands full and need a great week of preparation to begin our conference play.
Q. What is the injury status with E.J.?
We are waiting to find out. He is going to the doctor today. He had a little sprain or whatever you call it. They are just evaluating it right now to make sure how bad it is and to see if anything is in there. I don’t want to say anything until we know but I think it is just a sprain or however you look at it, a medium grade thing. We will have to see how it goes. We will judge it in a couple of days.
Q. It is better that it is not his throwing shoulder?
It is much better than if it was his right shoulder. It is a concern but it won’t affect his ball throwing but that happens a lot. I had two of them like that over my career. They are tolerable and you can manage through those but you have to make sure it doesn’t affect his throwing motion.
Q. Could E.J. practice this week or will you wait until Thursday and see?
I am sure he could. We will wait and see. He came back on the sideline of that football game and wanted to play. They couldn’t give me a definite answer on what the injury was. I was not going to put his career on the line for something like that. We had moved the ball some. I am not going to threaten injury with anyone. He wanted to. He came back on the sideline and wanted to go.
Q. How concerned are you about a lack of a running game?
We have to block better. The first couple of drives we did that. We had some runs for E.J. We don’t want to run him too many times, but we ran it four or five times. Each time we ran it we gained anywhere from eight to 24 yards. We have to get better in the running game. We have to be able to lineup and run the football, no doubt.
Q. Your thoughts on Syracuse and Pittsburgh joining the ACC?
They are two great universities, good traditions, good football programs, good basketball programs and good academic schools. As far as I am concerned they are good additions for the ACC.
Q. The fans seem to be taking this loss better than others and are holding their heads up high.
I don’t want that. It is a game we could have won and a game we need to win. I understand some of that but moral victories aren’t what we are here for. That is what mediocre people settle for and we don’t want that.
Q. Talk about Clemson.
Clemson is a very good team. They have big people on defense. They have good schemes and good players. On offense they have a good quarterback that is doing a good job. They have a very solid offensive line and a good running back. They overcame a 14 point deficit twice in that game. They are playing well. They have very good special teams. They are a very good football team. They are very talented. We have to have a great week of preparation.
Q. You haven’t won their the last 4 times. Any reasons?
Well Clemson has great football players. They have good teams. First of all you have to talk about the environment which is great, but you have to remember those guys out of the field they have good players. They have had a lot more guys drafted than we have. On offense they have had quite a few guys. Rodney and Ponder are the first guys here at Florida State in four years. They have good players. They have a great atmosphere, great environment and a good solid coaching staff. They are a quality program and always have been.
