D.J. Howard got his opportunity to lead the Tiger’s running game Saturday when Andre Ellington went down with an injury. D.J. seized the opportunity with 86 yards on nine carries.
“We practice things like this. Whenver you get your opportunity you have to step us. Coach Swinney stresses that. When that opportunity comes you have to seize the moment. We have been talking all week about seizing the moment,” said Howard.
Being from Alabama how did it feel to play that well against Auburn?
“That never crossed my mind. It is a team sport. I just came in and tried to get my team going,” said Howard.
Any butterfiles out there knowing it is the defending national champions?
“No, they put their pants on one leg at a time just like we do,” said Howard.
Did D.J. believe he earned more playing time with his performance Saturday?
“It opened up their eyes. Now they can understand I am capable. They know I can come in and give him relief,” said Howard.
After being recruited by Auburn and Alabama to play defense how did it feel to show them you could play running back?
“It probably opened their eyes a little bit about what I can do. But I doubt it changed their opinions. They think I would be a better defensive back. It is what it is,” said Howard.
Auburn struggled to bring down D.J. as he ran over a number of tacklers.
“It is the drive. I was telling myself don’t go down, don’t go down. I was feeding off the crowd. At the same time I was just trying to make a big play,” said Howard.
