Clemson senior Tanner Smith hopes the Tigers will pick up where they left off at the end of last season.
“Well we really hit our stride last year at the end of the season. We played Carolina very well in the ACC tournament. We ended the year playing a tough Virginia Tech team here and played really well. We won a game in the tournament, something that hasn’t been done here in a while. Then we lost to West Virginia but played a pretty solid game. This year we are just as excited about what the season can bring. We have six guys coming back from Brownell’s system. We know what we are supposed to do. We know how this camp is run. We know what to do and we just have to relay the message to these six freshmen and I know these guys are really excited about what we can do this season,” said Smith.
How will Tanner’s leadership role change now that he is a senior?
“Well I feel since I have been a freshman here I have been a leader by example. That has been great and been something the team has needed but this year I also have to be a leader vocally. We have guys that don’t know what to do yet and they are going to get frustrated. They are going to feel like they are not doing things on the court right. I remember what it was like to be a freshman. I felt like a freshman last year under coach Brownell’s system so to continue to keep them in good spririts is a big key for us,” said Smith.
How important is it for the six freshmen to contribute this year?
“It is very important for our six freshmen to get comfortable as quick as possible. They are going to have to play, but at the same time we expect them to do big things this year. They are a good group of guys and they are willing to work hard. The guys that pickup stuff the quickest are the ones that are going to play. Whoever picks up that defensive system quickly where we are getting after people and making it tough to score. It is going to be fun to watch them grow as a unit and I am really excited about it,” said Smith.
