Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney held his Tuesday press conference for the North Carolina game. Some of Dabo’s quotes from today:
On North Carolina’s offense.
They’re an NFL style team, very balanced. 14 passing TDs, 13 rushing TDs. They’re a ball control type of a team; they want to keep the ball from you if they can. That’s what hurt us last year they had the ball for 13:04 in the fourth quarter. Do a lot of shifts, motions, trades, have to get your gaps set everyone needs to be on the same page. Get you out of rhythm. Offensive line is huge, very big and athletic. Plays physical. Quarterback leads this league in efficiency, hasn’t thrown a pick in the last three games. Running back is very good, freshmen, his back up is also very good. Freshman has had five straight 100 yard rushing games. Veteran receivers and young guys that are capable of making big plays. Talented group.”
On playing at home Saturday.
“Glad to be back in Death Valley this week. We need our crowd to be rocking I can’t stress that enough. If there’s a game where we need our crowd to show up, it’s this week. This team needs that type of support and energy, having this place rocking is like playing with 12 people on the field. It’s a very difficult place to play. Our 1981 team is coming back here to be honored in a special way; I’m looking forward to spending time with them Friday night.”
On Steward and Anthony getting more playing time.
“I think you’ll see Anthony and Steward continuing to see time, Tony’s still a work in progress, you’ll see Anthony in our nickel situations. He brings a different dimension to our defense. He can help us.”
On Justin Parker
“Justin Parker is hurt right now; a little worried about him for this week. He’s still a young player that’s developing into a great player for us. He’s playing 20-25 snaps per game for us on special teams. A very good player that has a good future with us. He’s questionable for North Carolina.”
On stopping UNC’s running back.
“UNC’s running back is a slasher. If you don’t fit your gaps perfectly with him, he’ll hurt you. Kind of like CJ early on in his career. He’s gotten confident behind the big physical group up front.
On Andre Ellington’s performance against Maryland.
“I knew Ellington was going to have a great game, that’s why I made him captain. He had a great week of practice, I wasn’t surprised that he had a great game and I think he’ll have a great second half of the season. A few games where he was banged up but he’s fully healthy now and I think he’ll go full speed throughout the rest of the season.”
On Sammy Watkin’s hands.
“Sammy looks like Spider Man out there; he’s got great hands and attacks the football. Has great body control.”
