Week 7 in the ACC saw two upsets and another almost-upset in the five conference games as Miami (FL) won at North Carolina, Virginia surprised #12 Georgia Tech, and Clemson used a huge second-half comeback to beat Maryland. Three teams (Clemson, Virginia Tech, and Georgia Tech) are still ranked in the top-25 in the nation. All 12 teams are in action this week and all face conference opponents as the division races heat up.

Notes: LB Luke Kuechly is on pace to break NCAA single-season records for total tackles (193) and per-game averages (15.6). The junior All-American has 99 tackles (16.5 per game) in 2011. PK Nate Freese is 5-for-6 in field goals of 40 yards or longer. Seven of BC’s 13 TDs so far have been 20 or more yards. BC will need another strong finish (25-11 over the last six games in their first six ACC seasons) to streak their bowl appearance streak to 13 seasons.

Notes: Duke is 3-3 for the third time in David Cutcliffe’s four seasons, a mark they had accomplished only once in the 13 years prior to his arrival. QB Sean Renfree is making his mark on the Blue Devil record books; he is 6th in completions (477), tied for 7th in TDs (24), and 7th in yards (5,048). The WR combo of Donovan Varner and Conner Vernon are only 41 receptions short of setting the ACC record for receptions by teammates. 

Florida State        3-3 (1-2)

Notes: FSU has a completion of at least 46 yards in every game after QB E.J. Manuel’s first three completions at Duke all went for 50 or more yards. TE Nick O’Leary became the 5th FSU freshman to score a TD this season. RB Devonta Freeman had FSU’s first 100-yard rushing performance with 109 yards at Duke. The Seminoles have had six or more tackles for loss in all six games. PK Dustin Hopkins has made 17 straight FG, one short of the FSU record.

Notes: The Yellow Jackets have spent at least one week in the AP poll’s top-15 in seven straight seasons. Tech is 3-0 in games immediately following their first loss of a season under Paul Johnson. AB Orwin Smith has 1,030 yards rushing for his career in only 95 carries. WR Stephen Hill leads the nation in yards per reception (32.47). The Yellow Jackets snagged their eighth interception at Virginia, equaling last year’s season total.

Notes: The Terps tied a school record for most points scored (45) in an ACC loss. QB C.J. Brown had 177 yards passing and 162 rushing against Clemson, the most by an ACC QB since Woody Dantzler had 333 passing and 184 rushing against NC State in 2001. Brown’s 162 yards on the ground is the eighth most by a QB in ACC history. CB Cameron Chism’s INT return for a TD was his second of the season and ninth by a Terp over their last 22 games.

Notes: The Hurricanes have scored on 16 of their last 18 possessions in the last six quarters. Miami (FL) won their first game as an ACC member while getting two or fewer rushing first downs. QB Jacory Harris is eighth nationally in pass efficiency and has thrown 89 passes without an interception. RB Lamar Miller saw his streak of 100-yard rushing games come to an end at UNC. PK Jake Wieclaw is perfect in FG (7-for-7) and PATs (23-for-23) this season. 

NC State              3-3 (0-2)

Notes: QB Mike Glennon is second in the ACC in TD passes per game (2.67). RB James Washington has run for 100 or more yards in his last two games. WR T.J. Graham is second nationally in all-purpose yards (210 per game), is 12th among active FBS players, and 23rd in ACC history. Graham trails only Ted Brown in all-purpose yards by a State player. CB David Amerson leads the nation in interceptions (6) and INTs per game (1.00). 

North Carolina     5-2 (1-2)

Notes: Three of UNC’s last seven defeats have come by a 30-24 score, including this past weekend versus Miami (FL). QB Bryn Renner is seventh nationally in pass efficiency. RB Giovani Bernard had 110 yards and a TD against the Hurricanes. Bernard is tied for the national lead in TDs by a freshman (9) and has had five straight 100-yard rushing games. WR Dwight Jones caught his eighth TD of the season, only the seventh Tar Heel to do so.


Virginia                4-2 (1-1)

Notes: Saturday’s win was UVA’s first over a top-12 AP team in exactly six years and have now defeated a ranked foe four of the past five seasons. The Cavaliers are 4-2 for the first time since 2007. Virginia has received 56% of its TDs this season from freshman, the third-best percentage in FBS. DT Matt Conrath blocked the fourth kick of his career last week. UVA became the first team to lead Tech by more than 7 points and for 20 or more minutes in 2011.

Notes: The Hokies have won 11 straight games on the opponent’s home field. As an ACC member, Tech is 15-1 overall and 13-0 in conference games played in North Carolina. RB David Wilson is the first ACC player with six 100-yard rushing games in a season’s first seven contests since 1996. WR Jarrett Boykin caught his 16th career TD against Wake, good for fourth in Tech history and tied for first among active ACC players.

Notes: WR Chris Givens (140 yards against the Hokies) had his fifth 100-yard receiving game of the season, only the third Deacon to reach that mark. Givens also caught his third career TD of 75 or more yards, the first Wake player to ever do so. CB Merrill Noel leads the nation in passes defended (12 deflections and one INT). PK Jimmy Newman is tied for second nationally in FG/game (2.00).
