Week 8 in the ACC saw home teams win four of the six games, highlighted by Miami (FL)’s win over #19 Georgia Tech. This week, for the second consecutive week, all 12 teams are in action and face conference foes. Virginia and Miami (FL) kick off the action with a Thursday night matchup, while key games Saturday are Wake Forest at North Carolina and #5 Clemson at Georgia Tech. 

Boston College    1-6 (0-4)

Last Week: 30-14 loss at #12 Virginia Tech

This Week: Saturday, October 29 @ Maryland (3:00PM on RSN)

Up Next: Thursday, November 3 vs. Florida State (8:00PM on ESPN)

Notes: WR Bobby Swigert has caught at least one pass in 19 straight games. RB Rolandan Finch ran for 92 yards and had 53 receiving yards against the Hokies. LB Luke Kuechly extended his streak of games with 10 or more tackles to 29 when he had 19 stops at Virginia Tech. P Ryan Quigley is the sixth man in ACC history to have over 10,000 career punting yards (10,263 yards, a 40.57 average per punt). 

Duke                    3-4 (1-2)

This Week: Saturday, October 29 vs. #12 Virginia Tech (12:30PM on ACC Network)

Up Next: Saturday, November 5 @ Miami (FL) (3:00PM on RSN)

Notes: WR combo Donovan Varner and Conner Vernon have combined for 334 receptions as teammates, the third highest total by a duo in ACC history. PK Will Snyderwin has made his last six field-goal attempts and is 44-of-54 in his career while also making all 71 of his PATs. The Blue Devil defense held Wake Forest to one first down in the second half and also limited the Demon Deacons to just one total yard of offense in the third quarter. 

Florida State        4-3 (2-2)    

Last Week: 41-16 win over Maryland

This Week: Saturday, October 29 vs. NC State (12:00PM on ESPNU)

Up Next: Thursday, November 3 @ Boston College (8:00PM on ESPN)

Notes: Florida State is the first FBS team win consecutive games by a 41-16 score, also the only two times an ACC contest has ended with those scores. The Noles have scored 30 or more points in nine of their past 11 contests. QB E.J. Manuel has a career pass-completion percentage of 66.02, 10th among active career passers in FBS. PK Dustin Hopkins missed his first career attempt inside 37 yards against Maryland. 

Georgia Tech       6-2 (3-2)    

Last Week: 24-7 loss at Miami (FL)

This Week: Saturday, October 29 vs. #5 Clemson (8:00PM on ABC)

Notes: With their next ACC win, the Jackets will secure their 17th straight season at .500 or better in league play, a conference record. Tech’s 20-play TD drive at Miami was the program’s longest TD mark in play count since 2006. The Jackets have intercepted more passes (nine) than in all of 2010 (eight). Tech is one of only three FBS teams (LSU and Penn State) that have not allowed more than 211 passing yards in any game in 2011. 

Maryland              2-5 (1-3)

Notes: QB Danny O’Brien is 11th in Maryland history in career passing yardage (3,548). RB Davin Meggett has 2,041 rushing yards in his career, the 11th Terrapin to reach the 2,000 mark. WR Quintin McCree set career highs in receptions (9) and yards (177) against FSU. Maryland started their seventh different defensive lineup in seven games against the Noles and three of their top four tacklers for the game were freshman.


Miami (FL)            4-3 (2-2)

Up Next: Saturday, November 5 vs. Duke (3:00PM on RSN)

Notes: The Canes improved to 5-5 against AP-ranked opponents in the past three seasons. QB Jacory Harris and WR Tommy Streeter, high school teammates, have hooked up on nine pass plays of 25 or more yards this season. DB JoJo Nicholas had an interception and fell on a muffed punt in the end zone for a touchdown against the Jackets. Miami (FL) held Tech to 16% of is scoring average, 40% of its total offense figure, and 38.5% of its rushing average. 

NC State              4-3 (1-2)

Last Week: 28-14 win at Virginia

This Week: Saturday, October 29 @ Florida State (12:00PM on ESPNU)

Up Next: Saturday, November 5 vs. North Carolina (12:30PM on ACC Network)

Notes: The Wolfpack won at Virginia for the first time since 1994. QB Mike Glennon is second in the ACC in TD passes per game (2.71) and is on pace to challenge Philip River’s school record of 34 in a season (has 19 in seven games). CB David Amerson has already tied State’s school record for interceptions in a season (8) and is approaching the ACC record of 11. The Pack forced nine Cavalier punts; the highest total by an ACC opponent since 2005. 

North Carolina     5-3 (1-3)    

Last Week: 59-38 loss at #7 Clemson

This Week: Saturday, October 29 vs. Wake Forest (3:30PM on ESPNU)

Up Next: Saturday, November 5 @ NC State (12:30PM on ACC Network)

Notes: The Tar Heels’ point total at Clemson was their third-highest in defeat in the ACC era and they are now 90-3 when scoring 38 or more points as an ACC member. UNC has been outscored 27-7 in its past two first quarters after having a 42-3 edge in their first six games. T.J. Thorpe became the second player in UNC history to return a kickoff 100 yards and also caught a 52-yard touchdown pass against the Tigers.

Notes: WR Kris Burd is fourth in UVA history in receptions (140) and seventh in yardage (1,724). RB Clifton Richardson was the 13th Cavalier to catch a pass in 2011 when he caught a TD in the second quarter against NC State. CB Chase Minnifield blocked a field-goal against the Pack and has now had an interception, pass break-up, or a blocked kick in six games this season. UVA is 12th nationally in pass defense, allowing 176 yards per game through the air.

Notes: The Hokies have won 10 straight games on the opponent’s home field, tied for the longest such run in ACC history. As an ACC member, Tech is 15-1 overall and 13-0 in conference games played in North Carolina. RB David Wilson has five straight 100-yard rushing games and seven on the year (the ACC record is 10). WRs Jarrett Boykin (2,541) and Danny Coale (2,319) occupy the top two spots on Tech’s career receiving list.


Wake Forest        5-2 (4-1)

Notes: Jim Grobe won his 100th career game last weekend and is 30-7 against other NC teams at Wake. QB Tanner Price is the first Deacon to throw a TD pass in seven straight games since 1997. WR Chris Givens has 100 or more receiving yards and a touchdown in five games this season (only one other FBS player has accomplished this in 2011) and is the first ACC player to do so since 2000. PK Jimmy Newman has made 12 straight field-goal attempts.
