Week 9 in the ACC saw a couple of upsets, including previously unbeaten Clemson dropping a tough game at Georgia Tech. This week there are four conference games and a big non-conference matchup, Notre Dame at Wake Forest. In conference play, Florida State is at Boston College (Thursday), Virginia travels to Maryland, Duke is at Miami, and North Carolina heads to NC State. 

 

 

 

 

Boston College    2-6 (1-4)

Last Week: 28-17 win at Maryland

This Week: Thursday, November 3 vs. Florida State (8:00PM on ESPN)

Up Next: Saturday, November 12 vs. NC State (12:30PM on ACC Network)

Notes: The Eagles had 372 rushing yards against Maryland, their highest total since at least 1999. Conversely, their 32 passing yards was the lowest by any winner in ACC play since at least 1999. RB Rolandan Finch had 243 yards, third best in Eagle history, on 39 carries, fourth best by a BC player. LB Luke Kuechly extended his streak of 10 or more tackles to 30 when he had 12 stops against the Terps. BC is now 4-1 all-time at Maryland. 

Duke                    3-5 (1-3)

Up Next: Saturday, November 12 @ Virginia (3:00PM on RSN)

Notes: The Devils have allowed a total of 213 yards in the second half of their past two games, 66 of which came on one play against Wake Forest. WR Donovan Varner has 183 catches in his career; the Duke record is 189. S Matt Daniels has 15 passes defended in 2011, good for second in the FBS. Daniels also ranks 2nd among all defensive backs nationally averaging 10.3 tackles per game.

Up Next: Saturday, November 12 vs. Miami (FL) (TBA)

Notes: Florida State has now won two games by 34-0 and 41-16 scores each while dropping two contests by 35-30 finals. The Noles have scored 30 or more points in 10 of their past 12 games and their 34-0 win against the Wolfpack was the most lopsided in ACC play since 2003. QB E.J. Manual had a career high 25 completions against NC State, while freshman RB Devonta Freeman ran for a TD in his third straight game.

Notes: Georgia Tech extended is ACC-record of consecutive seasons at or above .500 in conference play to 17. As an ACC member, the Jackets have now won five games over teams ranked in the AP Top 6. QB Tevin Washington’s 176 yards rushing against Clemson were the most by an ACC QB since October 2001. S Jemea Thomas intercepted two passes, broke up another two, and forced a fumble against the Tigers. 

Maryland              2-6 (1-4)

Notes: Maryland’s youth continued to show against BC as WR Adrian Coxson had his first career receptions and a TD. QBs Danny O’Brien and C.J. Brown split time against the Eagles. RB Davin Meggett is now tied for 10th place in rushing yards (2,140) in Maryland history. The Terps have 34 interceptions in their past 24 games. CB Cameron Chism, in his 31st straight start, intercepted his third pass of the year and seventh of his career. 

Miami (FL)            4-4 (2-3)

This Week: Saturday, November 5 vs. Duke (3:00PM on RSN)

Up Next: Saturday, November 12 @ Florida State (TBA)

Notes: QB Jacory Harris is sixth in ACC history in passing TDs (65) and second in Cane history in yards (7,895). WR Tommy Streeter’s 176 receiving yards against UVA is the highest by a Hurricane in the school’s ACC era. Harris and Streeter have combined for 12 plays of 25 or more yards this season. LB Sean Spence had 10 tackles against the Cavaliers and is 12th nationally in tackles with an average of 10.71 stops a game. 

NC State              4-4 (1-3)

Notes: The Wolfpack was shutout in an ACC road game for the first time since October of 1990. WR T.J. Graham is sixth nationally in all-purpose yards per game (177.0) and only 76 yards away from setting the ACC record for kickoff return yardage (2,984). LB Audie Cole had 10 stops at FSU to lead NC State, the fifth time he has led the team in stops this season. CB David Amerson, 8 interceptions in 2011, was named a semifinalist for the Jim Thorpe Award. 

North Carolina     6-3 (2-3)

Notes: The Tar Heels are bowl eligible for the fourth straight year. RB Giovani Bernard’s 11 TDs are the most by any Tar Heel since 1995. UNC’s total points (49) and yards (560) were its most in a game since 2004. QB Bryn Renner threw for a career-high 338 yards against Wake and his 19 TD passes are second in UNC history and four short of the school record of 23. WR Dwight Jones has 121 career receptions, 10th-highest total in Tar Heel history.

Notes: WR Darius Jennings became the fourth UVA freshman to score a TD this season. Cavalier freshman have scored 12 TDs in 2011, led by RB Kevin Parks’ seven. RB Perry Jones threw a 37-yard TD pass and caught a 78-yard TD against Miami (FL), the first Cavalier to do so since 2002. Jones is the first FBS player to have 35 or more passing yards, 60 or more rushing yards, and 75 or more receiving yards since 2001.

Notes: The Hokies have won 11 straight games on their opponent’s home field, an ACC record and a streak that goes back to their last game at Georgia Tech. Frank Beamer is now 30-6 on the opponent’s home field during the Hokies’ ACC tenure, the highest winning percentage (.833) by an ACC coach with at least 10 road games. RB David Wilson is the ninth player in ACC history and first Hokie to rush for 100 or more yards in six straight games.

Notes: With its next win, Wake will be bowl eligible for the fifth time in Jim Grobe’s 11 seasons; the school made five bowl appearances in its 100 seasons prior to his arrival. WR Chris Givens needs 126 yards to set the school record for receiving yards in a season (1,053 by Ricky Proehl in 1989). DB Merrill Noel leads all FBS players with 16 passes defended and has a shot at breaking the ACC record of 23.
