Week 10 in the ACC two teams (Florida State and Virginia) become bowl-eligible and another (Miami (FL)) move within one win of becoming bowl-eligible. This week there are five conference matchups and one non-conference contests. In conference play, two games (#9 Virginia Tech @ #19 Georgia Tech and Wake Forest @ #9 Clemson) play key roles in the division races. Elsewhere around the conference, NC State is at Boston College, Miami (FL) travels to Florida State, and Duke is at Virginia. Maryland steps out of conference as it “travels” to Notre Dame in a game at FedEx Field in Landover, MD. 

Boston College    2-7 (1-5)

Notes: Boston College will miss a bowl for the first time since 1998. The Eagles streak of 12 consecutive seasons with a bowl appearance was tied for the fifth-longest active run in the FBS. LB Luke Kuechly was in on 20 tackles against FSU, his fourth game of 20 or more stops in his career. His 491 career tackles puts him seventh on the ACCs all-time list (going back to 1983) and sixth on the NCAA charts (going back to 2000).

Notes: WR Donovan Varner has 187 receptions (two behind the school record) for 2,444 yards (third-best) in his career while Conner Vernon has 184 catches (third ranked) for 2,502 yards (second-highest). Duke has 17 rushing TDs and is on pace to finish with its most since 1976 (25). PK Will Snyderwine is fourth in Devil history with 208 career points.

Notes: The Seminoles are bowl-eligible for a 30th consecutive season; the longest active run in the FBS. FSU has scored 30 or more points in six straight games for the first time since 2000. Freshman RB Devonta Freeman has a rushing TD in four straight games as FSU has 15 rushing TDs in its past five games after have only three in their first four outings. The Noles defense ranks 4th in total defense, 3rd in rushing defense, and 7th in scoring defense.

Notes: The Jackets are on pace to average over 323 rushing yards per game for the second year in a row; they are at 328 through nine games this season. Tech is second in the FBS in rushing while having no individual at 71 yards or better. A win against the Hokies pulls the Jackets into a tie for the Coastal Division lead, while a loss eliminates them from the race. LB Julian Burnett has eight or more tackles in four of the past five games.

Notes: Senior RB Davin Meggett now stands ninth in Terrapin rushing history with 2,192 career yards. WRs Quintin McCree (117 yards) and Kerry Boykins (101) were the first Terps to exceed 100 or more yards in the same game since 2008. DT Joe Vellano is the nation’s leader in tackles by a lineman (8.00 per game). P Nick Ferrara has 14 punts inside the opponent’s 20-yard line; good for second in the ACC and only one behind the leader. 

Miami (FL)            5-4 (3-3)

Notes: QB Jacory Harris is tied for fourth on the ACC career chart for passing TDs (68). RB Lamar Miller is the first Cane to rush for 1,000 yards in a season in their ACC era. WR Tommy has 38 receptions in 2011; 13 of which have gone for 25 or more yards. Miami (FL) scored on their first four possessions against Duke; the second time this season they have opened a game with scores on their first four possessions. 

NC State              5-4 (2-3)

Up Next: Saturday, November 19 vs. #9 Clemson (TBA; Six-day option)

Notes: With its win last weekend, State tied its longest win streak against the Tar Heels. The Pack held UNC to three rushing yards, the third time in the last five years UNC has been held to 12 or fewer yards on the ground. RB James Washington has three games of 100 or more rushing yards, the first State player to do so since 2007. CB David Amerson made his nation-leading ninth INT Saturday; a Pack record and two off the ACC mark of 11.

Notes: With their loss to NC State, the Heels were shut out for the first time since 2006. Due to QB Bryn Renner’s injury versus the Pack, backup Braden Hanson saw his first extensive action of 2011. RB Giovani Bernard is the first UNC back to reach the 1,000 yard rushing mark in 14 years. WR Dwight Jones is having a breakout season with 63 catches for 946 yards in 10 games. He has a chance to break UNC records in receptions (74) and yards (1,222). 

Virginia                6-3 (3-2)

This Week: Saturday, November 12 vs. Duke (3:00PM on RSN)

Up Next: Saturday, November 19 @ Florida State (TBA; Six-day option)

Notes: UVA has posted consecutive road victories for the first time since 2002. The Cavaliers also ended a 13-game losing streak in the month of November that dated back to 2007. QB Michael Rocco had a career-high 307 passing yards against the Terps. The Cavs have scored six TDs of 35 or more yards in the past four games. S Rodney McLeod tied a single-game school record (last achieved in 1996) with three INTs against Maryland.

Notes: The Hokies have won 11 straight games on their opponent’s home field, an ACC record and a streak that goes back to their last game at Georgia Tech. With a win in its final three games, Tech will have five or more ACC wins in eight straight regular seasons; only the third program in league history to do so. RB David Wilson will seek to become the sixth player in ACC history to have nine or more 100-yard rushing games in a single season.

 

Wake Forest        5-4 (4-2)

Notes: Wake is trying to become bowl eligible for the fifth time in Grobe’s 11th season after having five bowl appearances in the previous 100 years. WR Chris Givens has 985 receiving yards this season and is approaching the Deacon record of 1,053 set by Ricky Proehl in 1989). DB Merrill Noel leads all FBS players with 16 passes defended. The crowd of 36,307 for the Notre Dame game was the largest to see Wake play a non-ACC opponent at BB&T Field.
