Swinney Responds to Spurrier

By Ashley Denny.

Thursday following practice Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney was asked about comments that South Carolina head coach Steve Spurrier was reported to have said Saturday night.

Spurrier was reported to say “We are not Alabama or LSU but we certainly aren’t Clemson”.

Coach Swinney went into great detail about how South Carolina is not Clemson.

“Well its sad that I get asked a question like thayt on a thursday before a championship game. I heard that, its the kind of thing that gets back to you. I don’t know if he really said that or not, guess he did since there’s been no rebuttal. But to be honest with you if he said that its disappointing, I was taught to win and lose with class and that’s a childish thing to put out there to be honest with you.

“I think that our program speaks for itself and I’d have to agree with him. They’re not Clemson and never will be to be honest. No three game winning streak is going to change that. Wasn’t the  First time they won three in a row and it won’t be the last, it might be 50 more years but it’ll happen again. I’ve gone out of my way to be complimentary to them and coach Spurrier, I’ve got a lot of respect for coach Spurrier but I’m going to defend my program, my players, coaches. I’m going to defend Clemson University because I believe in it. I just think that he’s exactly right they’re not Clemson and never will be. You’re looking at the best era of South Carolina football right now with their second 10 win season. They won a championship in 1969 and were SEC east champs last year, this rivalry though, there’s a lot of rivalries out there and this is more like a domination. That’s a fact, my kids grandkids won’t live long enough to see this become a rivalry.

“It is what it is, again I have respect for their program but South Carolina’s not Clemson there’s a lot of differences. This is a place that’s won a national title, 17 conference championships, 2 division titles, heck we’ve won more bowl games than they’ve ever been to. Our program has 100+ more wins. That’s reality, that’s the best era they’ve had of South Carolina football is right now, they’re doing a great job down there and have whipped our butts the last 3 years and that’s my job as coach to change that. Coach Spurrier has been there 7 years, after five he had 35 wins and a new contract. After five years if I only have 35 wins here there’ll be a new coach at Clemson and there should be because there’s a different standard.

“He’s exactly right, they aint LSU, Bama, or certainly not Clemson. That’s why Carolinas in Chapel hill, USC is in  California and the university in this state always has been and always will be Clemson University. You can print that, tweet that whatever. I’m proud of who we are and know who we are here at CU, I know where we’re going. But I guess my response is he’s right, he’s exactly right,” said Swinney.
