Clemson’s seniors led the Tigers to a 60-40 victory over Winthrop Saturday afternoon at Littlejohn Coliseum.
Tanner Smith led Clemson with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists. Andre Young added 15 for the Tigers.
Clemson shot well hitting 50 percent from the field including 7-14 from three. The Tiger’s pressure defense held Winthrop to 31 percent from the field and only 20 percent from three.
With 17:06 to go in the half Andre Young hit a free throw to put the Tigers up 10-2. Winthrop hit a three with 7:03 to go to cut the lead to four at 22-18. Clemson ended the half on a 9-6 run to lead 31-24 at the half.
The Tigers took control early in the second half with a 12-0 run to lead 43-24. Winthrop could only manage nine points in the final 11 minutes as Clemson cruised to an easy victory.
With the victory the Tigers moved to 5-4 on the season. Clemson also started 5-4 in 2010. Monday night the Tigers will host Alabama State at 7:00 PM.
