Clemson, SC – UAB defeated Clemson 2-1 on opening day at Doug Kingsmore in front of 5,944 fans.
Clemson jumped out to the lead in the second, but were shutout the rest of the way. Spencer Kieboom went 2-3 for the Tigers. Jason Stolz and Jay Baum each had one hit for the Tigers who totaled only four on the afternoon.
Kevin Brady got the start for the Tigers. Brady went five innings giving up four hits, one run, one earned run, two walks and had four strikeouts. Matt Campbell pitched three strong innings of relief, but picked up the loss. Campbell gave up four hits and one earned run to go with three strikeouts and no walks. Freshman Daniel Gossett came in to close it out for the Tigers in the ninth and didn’t give up a hit.
Clemson got on the board in the bottom of the second. With one out Jon McGibbon walked. Spencer Kieboom doubled to left center to score Jon McGibbon from first.
The Tigers threatened again in the bottom of the third. Jay Baum doubled to left center to start the inning. Thomas Brittle was hit by a pitch. Tyler Slaton grounded to the pitcher advancing Baum to third and Brittle to second. Richie Shaffer was intentionally walked to load the bases. Phil Pohl reached on a fielder’s choice with Baum out at home. Jon McGibbon fouled out to end the inning.
UAB scored a run in the top of the fourth on a sacrifice fly. In the top of the seventh UAB took the lead 2-1 after as they scored on another sacrifice fly.
With the loss the Tigers moved to 0-1 on the season. Clemson and UAB will play a doubleheader Saturday with the first game scheduled for 11 AM.
