The Tigers won their first game of the season Saturday as they took the first game of a doubleheader against UAB 6-1. Clemson scored four runs in the first three innings and never looked back.
Dominic Leone pitched well for the Tigers going six innings and only giving up two hits. Leone finished with four strikeouts and one walk. Mike Kent came in and pitched the seventh inning and gave up two hits. Scott Firth pitched the eighth for the Tigers and gave up three hits, one earned run with two strikeouts. Clay Bates came in and finished things off in the ninth giving up one hit and one walk.
Brad Fielder and Richie Shaffer both homered for the Tigers. Felder went 2-4 with 3 RBIs and Shaffer went 2-4 with 2 RBIs. Jason Stolz was 3-4 for the Tigers and Thomas Brittle was 2-3.
Clemson’s offense got going early in the first inning. Thomas Brittle doubled down the right field line. With one out Richie Shaffer hit a towering homerun to left field
Thomas Brittle ledoff the third inning with a perfect bunt. Brad Felder followed with his first homerun of the year, a shot to left field.
Jason Stolz started the fourth with a single to right center then stole second. Jay Baum grounded to second advancing Stolz to third. Thomas Brittle walked to put runners on the corners. Brad Felder singled to right scoring Stolz and advancing Brittle to third. After four innings the Tigers led 5-0.
Richie Shaffer started the seventh with a double to center field. Phil Pohl doubled down the left field line to score Shaffer. After seven the Clemson lead was 6-0.
UAB got on the board with their first run in the top of the eighth.
The Tigers moved to 1-1 on the season. The final game of the series will start around 2:15.
