TheClemsonInsider.com caught up with Clemson head coach Jack Leggett, Scott Firth and Steve Wilkerson following the Tiger’s 9-6 victory over Maine on Sunday.
It was a good weekend of baseball. They played well very and are well coached. They have a good team and are very solid. We overcame some adversity yesterday being down four runs and then overcame six runs today. We were sloppy on defense and did some uncharacteristic type things with five errors. I guess it is like winning a football game with five fumbles and you just figure out a way to win it. We did a nice job and didn’t panic. We took some good swings and got some big hits. Wilkerson had a really nice day for us. It was huge to get those two runs to close it to 6-2. We had the bases loaded and I thought Attanasio’s ball was going to get through for us. Then we had the two-run homer to cut into it some more. Wilkerson’s big hit tied it for us and Phil’s hit put us ahead. We had a lot of good things going on for us offensively. Pitching wise, I thought our relievers did a good job.
On the comebacks and getting two-out runs:
It was just not an easy day at all. They came in and played just like I thought they would: tough, hard-nosed, blue collar, and glad to be outside. They are very solid at all positions. They have a good-looking veteran team and will give people some trouble. Once they get some rhythm going on their two-week stay in the south, they will be a tough team to be reckoned with. Today was a big boost for us. You don’t want to lose this game going into a long week. We will just try to feed off of this. Coming from behind is always a nice way to do it, but a hard way. It is behind us and we just have to go practice for a few days and then go play next weekend.
On what he has learned about his team through two weeks:
We are just going to keep on getting better. I think we are playing hard. The games we have lost we just have not hit that well and faced some really good Friday night pitchers. We have to be able beat those type guys because that is what we will see in the ACC. We just have to keep our offense going. Today on defense just wasn’t us. We will play a lot better defense. We have been pitching well. I really think when we get our offense going it will be a great help for us.
On his thought for the South Carolina series next weekend:
We will be ready to play. We know they have a good ballclub and we have a good ballclub. They have some good pitching and we have some good pitching. It will be a good matchup.
On his day today
I just tried to get out there, put a few balls in play, and get some things started on offense for us. I just kept the same approach I’ve had all year and it went well. It just felt good today.
On being the only active Tiger with a four-hit game:
I had no idea. There are a bunch of good hitters on this team and that’s an honor.
On coming back from down 6-0:
They really came out and played us hard. They are a good team. They put the ball in play and have some good arms on the hill. We just tried to keep fighting back, get a few runs on the board, and were able to get something going.
On the upcoming South Carolina series:
It was definitely good to win these last two games and build some momentum. They are a really good team and are just going to go out and play them hard. I am sure it will be a classic Clemson-Carolina battle. They put some runs on the board and we will try to do the same.
On this year’s format:
It is somewhat different playing on the road. We are pretty used to it though, with the last few years having a similar format. It won’t be too big of a difference.
On his mindset today:
Coach Pep talks to us a lot about staying consistent, no matter what happens. You just have to keep an even keel and keeping making your pitches. That is what I was focused on. I just took it one pitch at a time and tried to make the best pitch I could.
On the comebacks this weekend:
It is not something we would like to make a habit of, but it is a good thing for us to show that we are able to come back in games. We have the confidence no matter how the scoreboard looks. We are just going to keep playing and things will work out for us.
On the team’s confidence heading into the South Carolina series:
The wins are definitely huge for us after losing a tough game on Friday. Everyone will be excited to play this series. We just have to lock in during practice and focus. We will be ready to go.
