Clemson, SC – The Tigers scored early and often as they routed Holy Cross 16-4 Wednesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Richie Shaffer continued to be a beast at the plate going 3-4 on the night. Phil Pohl went 3-3 with five RBIs. Jon McGibbon picked up where he left off on Sunday and went 2-4 with four RBIs including a two-run homerun.
David Haselden got the start for the Tigers and picked up his first win of the season. David went five innings and gave up only six hits, one run and one earned run with two strikeouts and no walks.
Holy Cross jumped to a 1-0 lead in the first.
Clemson bounced right back. Thomas Brittle walked and then stole second. With one out Richie Shaffer walked and Brittle stole third. Phil Pohl hit a sacrifice fly to center to score Brittle. The score was tied at one after the first.
In the second inning the Tigers took the lead. Garrett Boulware was hit by a pitch to start the inning. Jon McGibbon homered to right field to put the Tigers up 3-1.
Clemson plated three runs in the third. Steve Wilkerson doubled to right to start things off for the Tigers. Richie Shaffer walked. Phil Pohl doubled to left center scoring Wilkerson and advancing Shaffer to third. Joe Costigon sacrificed to deep right scoring Shaffer. Garrett Boulware walked. With two outs Jason Stolz singled to left scoring Pohl. After three the Tigers led 6-1.
With two outs in the fourth Phil Pohl singled. Joe Costigan followed with a single to right. Garrett Boulware was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Jon McGibbon singled to right scoring Pohl and Costigan to stretch the lead to 8-1.
The Tigers added some insurance in the fifth. Tyler Slaton reached base with a leadoff walk. With one out Steve Wilkerson singled to left. Richie Shaffer doubled to the warning track scoring Slaton and advancing Wilkerson to third. Phil Pohl hit a sacrifice fly to score Wilkerson and the Tigers led 10-1 after five.
Holy Cross rallied in the seventh to score three runs.
Clemson responded in the bottom of the seventh. Jay Baum singled to start things off for the Tigers. Richie Shaffer doubled down the left field line advancing Baum to third. Phil Pohl doubled to score Baum and Shaffer. Dominic Attanasio singled to score Pohl and put Clemson up 13-4.
The Tigers plated three more in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs Richie Shaffer doubled to center. Phil Pohl walked. Mike Dunster doubled to score Shaffer. Dominic Attanasio singled up the middle to score Pohl and Dunster to make the final score 16-4.
Clemson moves to 6-4 on the season with the victory. The Tigers battle North Carolina Friday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore.
