Clemson, SC – It wouldn’t be Friday night without a close game at Doug Kingsmore.  For the fourth week in a row the Tigers lost a one run game on Friday night.  Clemson left the bases loaded in the ninth inning as they feel 4-3 to North Carolina.

Richie Shaffer continued to be hot at the plate going 3-4 with one RBI.

Kevin Brady got the start for the Tigers and pitched well for five innings.  Brady went 5.1 innings and gave up six hits, four runs and four earned runs.  Kevin pitched 75 pitches with 57 strikes, six strikeouts and no walks.  Matt Campbell pitched two scoreless innings for the Tigers only giving up one hit.  Scott Firth came in and got the final five outs for the Tigers.  Firth worked out of trouble in both the eighth and ninth innings.

North Carolina jumped out to an early lead as they plated one run in the first.  The score remained 1-0 Heels until the fifth inning.

In the bottom of the fifth Jason Stolz doubled down the right field line to start the inning.  Garrett Boulware singled through the right side to score Stolz from second.  After five the game was tied 1-1.

North Carolina didn’t waste any time taking the lead back as they plated three runs in the top of the sixth.  Matt Campbell came in for Kevin Brady to end the damage in the sixth.

Clemson bounced back in the bottom of the sixth.  Steve Wilkerson reached on an error by the second baseman.  Richie Shaffer followed with to the right field corner.  With one out Spencer Kieboom hit a slow grounder to first to score Shaffer.  After six the Tigers trailed 4-3.

The Tigers threatened in the eighth.  Richie Shaffer started the eighth with a single to right.  Phil Pohl hit a rocket to the warning track but it was caught by the Heels.  Spencer Kieboom flied out to second.  Jay Baum pinch hit for Costigan and walked.  Jason Stolz went down looking to end the threat.

Clemson loaded the bases in the ninth, but couldn’t get a run across the plate.  Dominic Attanasio pinch hit and singled to right.  Tyler Slaton came in to run for Attanasio.  Jon McGibbon bunted Slaton over to second.  With two outs Steve Wilkerson was hit by a pitch.  Richie Shaffer walked to load the bases.  Phil Pohl went down on strikes to end the game.

The Tigers fell to 6-5 on the season with the loss and 1-0 in the ACC.  Clemson and North Carolina play game two Saturday at 1.
