Clemson, SC – The Tigers won their fourth game in a row as they downed Elon 6-2 Tuesday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.
Jonathan Meyer got the start for the Tigers and pitched well. Meyer went five innings and gave up only seven hits, one run, one earned run and had five strikeouts. Patrick Andrews pitched the sixth and seventh innings for the Tigers giving up three hits, one run and one earned run. Mike Kent closed it out for going two innings and giving up no hits and no runs.
Steve Wilkerson went 4-4 for the Tigers and drove in two runs. Tyler Slaton played center because of the injury to Thomas Brittle and went 2-4 with his first RBI of the season.
Clemson jumped to an early lead plating three runs in the first. Elon started the game by walking Steve Wilkerson, Jason Stolz and Richie Shaffer to load the bases with no outs. Phil Pohl singled to center scoring Wilkerson. Brad Felder reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Stolz. Spencer Kieboom hit a sacrifice fly to score Shaffer.
Elon got on the board with one run in the third.
In the fourth inning Tyler Slaton singled up the middle to start the inning then stole second. Steve Wilkerson singled to right scoring Slaton. After four the Tigers led 4-1.
The lead was cut to 4-2 in the sixth when Elon plated their second run.
Clemson added some insurance in the bottom of the seventh. With one out Jay Baum singled to center. Garrett Boulware grounded to short advancing Baum to second. With two outs Tyler Slaton singled to right scoring Baum and advanced to second on a throwing error. Steve Wilkerson drove in Slaton with a single to right. The Tiger led 6-2 after seven.
The Tigers moved to 10-8 with the victory. Clemson and Elon play again Wednesday afternoon at 5 PM at Fluor Field in Greenville.
