Leggett - Our Approach Was Horrible

TheClemsonInsider.com caught up with Clemson head coach Jack Leggett following the Tiger’s 8-4 loss to Presbyterian.

On the game tonight:

Our approach was horrible tonight coming off our best game of the year last night. We were a totally different team tonight. We did not play good defense, didn’t pitch well, and just got beat. We did not play anywhere near the level we were last night and that is just really disappointing to me. We are going to get back out here tomorrow and have a different approach or we will be in trouble this weekend. We cannot play like that and expect to win; we don’t have a good enough team for that. We have to be a team that is on edge and do the little things right.

On the thought that the team had turned a corner last night:

I really thought we had turned it, but the corner just wasn’t very big. We have a ways to go. We have to be able to maintain something for more than 24-48 hours. There are no excuses for tonight; we just did not play well at all. Every game is important to us. We have put ourselves in a tough position. After last night, I thought we would come out and play a really solid game. Instead it looked like we could not get out of our own way. They hung in there, and the longer you let that happen, the more confidence they get and they did a great job with it.

On the team’s approach tonight:

We came out with the idea that we could do what we did last night. We just wanted to hit the ball on the ground, hit it flat, and be aggressive. Then the next thing I know we have 12 fly balls and 3 punch outs in our first 15 outs. We just didn’t give ourselves a chance at all. Their guy (Grammer) was throwing strikes, nothing we have not seen, and we just couldn’t do anything with it. We got behind and the defense fell apart a good bit. We had that one bad innings where we misplayed balls, didn’t block them, and let them get by us and they have a four-spot up on the board. They outplayed us tonight and just beat us.

On the Miami (FL) series coming up:

I have not even thought about them to be honest with you. I have no idea about them. We are just thinking about practice tomorrow. I imagine we will have the same rotation this weekend, but again, I just haven’t thought about it.
