Clemson, SC – Dominic Leone pitched seven strong innings for the Tigers and Richie Shaffer drove in two runs in the seventh to lead Clemson to a 3-1 victory over Miami.
“We played well today. I thought Dominic Leone pitched well for us. Patrick Andrews did a really nice job in relief. We played good defense. We turned three double plays which was big for us. We had a couple of pickoffs at third base. We got a timely hit from Richie and scored early,” said Leggett.
Dominic Leone pitched his best game of the season going seven innings and only giving up six hits, one run and one earned run with six strikeout. Leone struck out the side to start the game. Patrick Andrews finished things off for the Tigers going two innings and only giving up one hit and no runs.
Clemson scored three runs on eight hits. Richie Shaffer went 1-3 with two RBIs. Steve Wilkerson had another solid day at the plate going 2-4.
The Tigers took the lead in the bottom of the second. With one out Spencer Kieboom singled to left. Dominic Attanasio reached on an error. Tyler Slaton doubled to left center with two outs to score Kieboom. Clemson led 1-0 after the second.
Miami got on the board in the top of the fourth and tied the game 1-1.
Jason Stolz singled to start the seventh for the Tigers. Tyler Slaton reached on a fielder’s choice. Steve Wilkerson singled to the pitcher. With two outs Richie Shaffer doubled down the left field line scoring Slaton and Wilkerson to put Clemson up 3-1.
Clemson moved to 14-12 on the season overall and 5-6 in the ACC with the victory. Last season the Tigers also started the season 14-12 before finishing strong to host a regional. The Tigers and the Canes play game three tomorrow at noon.
