Clemson Takes Game Two 11-5


Durham, NC – Clemson scored early and often as they defeated Duke 11-5 Saturday afternoon.  The Tigers scored 11 runs on 15 hits, including a five run ninth inning.

Thomas Brittle went 4-6 with five RBI’s including a double and a triple.  Richie Shaffer went 3-4 with two RBIs.

Dominic Leone got the start for the Tigers and picked up the win to move to 5-2 on the season.  Leone went 6.1 innings and gave up nine hits, four runs and four earned runs.  His line would have been much better if not for some bad fielding that cost the Tigers three runs in the bottom of the seventh.  Patrick Andrews finished things off for the Tigers going 2.2 innings with three hits, one run and one earned run.

With one out Thomas Brittle singled up the middle.  Brittle advanced to second on a wild pitch.  Richie Shaffer hit a single up the middle to score Brittle.  After the top of the first the Tigers led 1-0.

Duke tied the game in the bottom of the second.  The Devils had three hits in the inning but Leone worked out of trouble with three strikeouts.

Thomas Brittle ledoff the third with an infield single.  Richie Shaffer hit a double off the top of the wall in left center to score Brittle.  Phil Pohl hit a sacrifice fly to score Brittle and Shaffer advanced to third.  Jon McGibbon hit a single to left to score Shaffer.  After the top of the third Clemson led 3-1.

In the bottom of the third Duke plated another run to make the score 3-2 Clemson.

Clemson threatened in the fifth but couldn’t get any clutch hits.  Richie Shaffer and Phil Pohl both singed to start the inning.  Jon McGibbon bunted but Shaffer was out at third.  Jay Baum grounded out to the pitcher before Spencer Kieboom hit a shot to left but right at the third baseman.

Garrett Boulware doubled down the left field line to start the sixth.  With one out Steve Wilkerson beat out a single to third.  Thomas Brittle tripled to right center scoring Boulware and Wilkerson to give the Tigers a 5-2 lead.

In the top of the seventh Jay Baum reached on an error to start the inning.  Spencer Kieboom singled to right.  Garrett Boulware bunted down the first base line and advanced the runners to second and third.  Jason Stolz walked to load the bases.  Steve Wilkerson grounded to first scoring Baum and put the Tigers up 6-2.

Duke rallied in the bottom of the seventh.  Steve Wilkerson had the opportunity to turn a double play but couldn’t make the play.  The Devils plated three runs to cut the Clemson lead to one.

Clemson added some insurance in the ninth.  Jay Baum walked to start the inning.  Spencer Kieboom bunted Baum over to second.  Tyler Slaton singled down the right field line to score Baum.  Jason Stolz reached on a fielder’s choice.  Steve Wilkerson walked to load the bases.  Thomas Brittle cleared the bases with a double to right.  Richie Shaffer hit a sacrifice to right to make the score 11-5 Tigers.

Clemson moved to 17-14 overall with the win and 7-7 in the ACC.  The Tigers and Devils play game three Sunday at 1 PM.
