McGibbon, Brittle Furman Postgame

By Trey McCurry. caught up with Jon McGibbon and Thomas Brittle following the victory over Furman.

Jon McGibbon

On his night at the plate:

To be honest, I was just approaching it with a mindset of putting the ball in play. I wanted to stay out of two strike counts and drive guys in if the opportunity was there. Luckily, there were some guys on base for me and I was able to come through. You just cannot think too much at the plate and I have been working on that. You just have to get up there, look for your pitch, and hit the ball hard.

On what has been working well for him the last few weeks:

I have been playing more relaxed and trying not to put too much pressure on myself. My main thing is to just not think too much and just going up there and trying to hit the ball hard somewhere.

On the week ahead:

We are playing good baseball right now and have some things clicking for us. We are pitching well and then driving guys in when they are on base. We have had some hiccups here and there, but we seem to be putting it all together.

On Clemson’s success at Fluor Field:

It is just fun for all the guys. It is a good atmosphere and guys always want to make sure we play well here when given the opportunity.

On being back to full health:

I still notice my finger every now and then, but for the most part everything is back to normal. It is just good to be back.

On settling in to the two-spot in the lineup:

I am pretty comfortable there and have been able to be there in the past a good bit. My job is to move the leadoff guy, Wilkerson, up and get him in scoring position so that Richie can drive him in.

On the week ahead:

We were able to get a big sweep this past weekend at Duke so we want to keep the momentum going into this week. Hopefully we will be able to get another win tomorrow against a good Georgia team and carry that into this weekend versus NC State. Everyone is starting to get more comfortable in their roles within the team and we are all settling in. We have been able to have a more regular lineup day to day and everyone is just feeling more comfortable.

On Clemson’s success at Fluor Field:

It is always a good atmosphere, a good feel, and just nice to come over here for a little change of scenery. We have been able to put up some runs and keep things going for us.

On the spacious outfield in Greenville:

I feel like I handled it pretty well. They hit the ball good and some balls really well and I was able to track them down. With so much ground to cover, I just turned and ran and before I knew it the ball was in my glove. On a couple of them, I was not sure I would have a shot but was able to get there and make a play.

Third-ranked Clemson routed Pitt last Saturday and looked crisp after a sluggish stint in the middle of the year due in large part to injuries. Defensively, the Tigers held the Panthers to 246 yards of (…)
