Clemson, SC – For the second week in a row the Tigers went extra innings on Friday night to win the opening game of an ACC series. Thomas Brittle’s single in the 12th inning scored Tyler Slaton to give Clemson a 7-6 victory over NC State.
Kevin Brady got the start for the Tigers and went 5.2 innings and gave up four hits, three runs and three earned runs. Scott Firth came in to relieve Brady in the fifth and went the distance to get the win. First went 6.1 innings only giving up two hits, three runs and one earned run.
Clemson scored seven runs on twelve hits. Thomas Brittle went 4-7 with four RBIs. Richie Shaffer was perfect at the plate going 3-3 with two RBIs.
The Tigers jumped out to an early lead. In the first Steve Wilkerson started with a single to right center. Thomas Brittle followed with a single to right. Richie Shaffer singled to score Wilkerson. Phil Pohl grounded into a double play but Brittle scored on the play to put the Tigers up 2-0 after the first.
In the bottom of the second Jay Baum walked to start the inning. With two outs Jason Stolz doubled to score Baum.
Thomas Brittle singled to start the third. Richie Shaffer doubled to left center to score Brittle and the Tigers led 3-0 after three.
NC State got on the board with three runs in the top of the sixth.
Clemson added another run bottom sixth. Once again it was Thomas Brittle who got it started with a two out single. After Richie Shaffer was intentionally walked Phil Pohl doubled down the left field line to score Brittle. Shaffer tried to score and was called out at home on bad call by the umpire.
The Pack took the lead with three more runs in the top of the seventh 6-5.
The Tigers fought back in the bottom of the eighth to tie the game. Spencer Kieboom walked with no outs. Tyler Slaton pinch ran for Kieboom and stole second. Jason Stolz grounded out to second advancing Slaton to third. Steve Wilkerson walked and Thomas Brittle reached on a fielder’s choice scoring Slaton.
Neither team could score again until the Tigers winning run in the bottom of the twelfth. Tyler Slaton walked to start the inning. With one out Steve Wilkerson walked. On a full count Thomas Brittle singled to right scoring Slaton to give the Tigers the victory.
Clemson moved to 20-15 on the season with the victory and 9-7 in the ACC. The Tigers and Pack play game two Saturday at noon.
