TheClemsonInsider.com has confirmed with a source that former Virginia Tech associate head coach James Johnson was on campus at Clemson on Sunday. Johnson was introduced as a new Clemson assistant during a banquet on Sunday.
An official announcement is expected from Clemson in the next 48 hours on the hiring of coach Johnson.
Coach Johnson reached the Final Four as an assistant on the staff at George Mason in 2006. He also served one year as an assistant at College of Charleston in 2003.
Johnson was known as one of Virginia Tech’s best assistant coaches. He will replace former Clemson assistant Rick Ray who left coach Brownell’s staff to take the head coaching position at Mississippi State.
Johnson and Brownell will hope to return the Tigers to the NCAA in 2013 after missing for the first time in five years.
