Clemson, SC – Clemson rallied for a five run sixth inning to take a 7-5 lead but Coastal Carolina pulled away to win 10-7.
Freshman Daniel Gossett got the start for the Tigers. Gossett went four innings giving up five hits, four runs and four earned runs. Matt Campbell pitched two innings for the Tigers giving up three hits, one run and one earned run. David Haselden came in to relieve Campbell. Haselden faced three batters and gave up three hits, one run and one earned run. Patrick Andrews pitched 1.1 innings and gave up two hits, four runs and four earned runs. Scott Firth pitched .2 innings and gave up two hits and no runs.
The Tigers scored seven runs on nine hits. Steve Wilkerson went 2-3 with one RBI. Phil Pohl picked up where he left off from a hot Maryland series going 3-5 with one RBI.
Coastal Carolina took the lead in the top of the first when they plated one run.
In the third the Tigers took the lead. Garrett Boulware and Jason Stolz both walked to start the inning. Steve Wilkerson bunted the runners over to second and third. Thomas Brittle grounded out to second scoring Boulware. Richie Shaffer walked before Phil Pohl doubled to score Stolz. After three the Tigers led 2-1.
Coastal Carolina took the lead back in the top of the fourth. Two walks and two singled plated two more runs to put Coastal up 3-2.
In the top of the fifth Coastal plated two more runs to build the lead to 5-2.
The Tigers bounced back in the bottom of the sixth. The Tigers scored five runs on three hits and four Coastal errors. Phil Pohl reached on an error to start the bottom of the sixth. Jon McGibbon singled to put runners on the corners with no outs. Baum reached on an error scoring Pohl and McGibbon advanced to third. Spencer Kieboom singled to right to score McGibbon. Garrett Boulware tried to bunt and missed, but the throw to second went into center allowing the runners to advance. Coach Leggett then allowed Dunster to pinch hit for Boulware with a 1-1 count and Dunster worked a walk to load the bases. Jason Stolz reached on a fielder’s choice but the throw went into right field allowing Kieboom to score. Wilkerson grounded out to second scoring Slaton. Thomas Brittle singled to score Stolz and make it 7-5 Tigers after six.
Clemson relievers couldn’t hold the lead as Coastal scored one in the seventh and four in the eighth to take the lead 10-7.
The Tigers fell to 24-18 with the loss. Clemson travels to Georgia Tech for a three game series beginning Wednesday night.
