Clemson (28-20) will host Tennessee Tech (19-27) Tuesday afternoon at 2:00PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Series

Clemson and Tennessee Tech have met four times on the diamond, with the Tigers holding a 4-0 lead in the series. The teams first met for a two-game series in 2003 and then had two meetings in the 2009 Clemson Regional. In 2003, Clemson defeated the Golden Eagles 7-5 and 8-0. In 2009, the Tigers topped Tennessee Tech 5-4 and 10-0. All four meetings have been held at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Jack Leggett is 6-0 all-time against the Golden Eagles, going 4-0 at Clemson and 2-0 while at Western Carolina.

The Golden Eagles

Tennessee Tech, led by eighth-year Head Coach Matt Bragga, is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. The Golden Eagles are 19-27 (9-12 OVC) on the season, including a mark of 4-12 on opponents’ home fields. Tennessee Tech enters the game off a home series win over Morehead State after being swept at home the previous weekend by Eastern Illinois. The Golden Eagles were picked to finish third in the OVC by league coaches in the preseason polls are coming off a 25-29 (12-12 OVC) season in 2011.

On the season, the Golden Eagles are hitting .306 as a team with 77 doubles, 11 triples, 44 homers, 22 stolen bases, 175 walks, 75 HBPs, and 323 strikeouts while averaging 6.4 runs per game. Sophomore Zach Stephens leads Tennessee Tech at the plate, batting .404 with 12 doubles and leads the team in homers (16), RBI (48), runs (41), and walks (28). Junior Michael Morris is hitting .343 with a triple, three homers, 26 RBI, and a team-best 15 doubles. Senior Chad Hayes as a team-high three triples while junior Austin Wulf leads the team with 20 HBPs and nine stolen bases.

The Tennessee Tech pitching staff has a 6.56 ERA this season, allowing 505 hits (.304 opponents’ batting average) and 203 walks against 319 strikeouts in 406.0 innings. Junior Tristan Archer (3-4, 4.46 ERA) leads the Golden Eagle staff with team highs in starts (12), innings (74.2), and strikeouts (61). Senior Matt Shepherd (4-3, 5.92 ERA) has a team-best four wins while fellow senior Cullen Park is the team’s closer with a team-leading three saves in a team-high 19 appearances.

The Tigers

Clemson enters the series 28-20 after taking two of three games from College of Charleston this weekend at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Tigers are 17-13 at home this season, including 11-7 against non-conference opponents.

On the season, the Tigers are hitting .276 as a team with 74 doubles, 14 triples, 30 homers, 44 stolen bases, 208 walks, 39 HBPs, and 300 strikeouts while averaging 5.8 runs per game. Junior Richie Shaffer leads Clemson at the plate batting .346 and is the team’s top power threat, leading the squad in doubles (15), homers (8), and walks (47) along with 40 RBI, 37 runs, and five stolen bases. Redshirt junior Thomas Brittle is hitting .331 with six doubles, two homers, and 32 RBI while leading the team with seven triples and is tied for the team-lead with eight stolen bases. Sophomore Steve Wilkerson is batting .322 with 11 doubles, three triples, 26 RBI, five stolen bases, and has scored a team-best 42 runs while senior Phil Pohl is hitting .304 with a team-high 44 RBI and 12 hit-by-pitches along with nine doubles and seven homers. Senior Brad Felder has five doubles, five homers, and is tied for the team-lead with eight stolen bases.

The Clemson pitching staff has a 3.73 ERA this season allowing 445 hits (.266 opponents’ batting average) and 177 walks against 366 strikeouts in 441.0 innings. Junior Dominic Leone (6-3, 5.31 ERA) leads the team in wins, starts (12), and innings (62.2) while Kevin Pohle is 5-2 with a 2.91 ERA in 12 appearances (10 starts). Junior Jonathan Meyer (2-4, 3.51 ERA) has a save in a team-best 20 appearances while freshman Daniel Gossett (5-2, 5.54 ERA) has a team-best 63 strikeouts in 52.0 innings.

Projected Starting Pitchers

Tennessee Tech will start junior righthander Nick Price. The Clinton, TN native is 2-0 with a 8.31 ERA in 10 appearances (three starts) in 2012. In 17.1 innings, he has allowed 23 hits (.311 opponents’ batting average) and six walks against 15 strikeouts.

 

Clemson will counter with redshirt sophomore righthander Mike Kent. The Springfield, VA native is 1-1 with a 2.16 ERA in 16 relief appearances in 2012. In 33.1 innings, he has allowed 34 hits (.262 opponents’ batting average) and seven walks against 19 strikeouts.

  • Thomas Brittle is on a 21-game hitting streak.
