Tim Cooney pitched into the eight inning for Wake Forest and held the Tigers to two runs as the Deacs downed Clemson 5-2 Thursday night.
Dominic Leone got the start for the Tigers but ran into trouble early. Leone pitched seven inning for the Tigers but gave up five early runs that the Tigers could not overcome. Leone gave up six hits, five runs and four earned runs. Mike Kent pitched the eight for the Tigers and didn’t give up any hits.
Clemson scored two runs on seven hits. Richie Shaffer has his first four hit game for the Tigers going 4-4 with two RBIs. The rest of the team went 3-25 at the plate.
Wake Forest took command early as the plated three runs in the third and two in the fourth.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the eighth. Jason Stolz was hit by a pitch with one out. Steve Wilkerson singled to center. With two outs Richie Shaffer doubled to left scoring Stolz and Wilkerson to make the score 5-2.
Clemson fell to 32-22 overall with the loss and 16-12 in the ACC. The Tigers and Deacs play game two Friday night at 6 PM.
