Clemson (26-11), ranked as high as #12 in the nation, hosts Furman (19-16) on Wednesday evening at 6:30PM at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

 

 

 

The Series

Clemson and Furman have met 201 times on the diamond, with the Tigers holding a 140-57-4 lead in the series. The teams first met in 1896 (the first two games in school history) and have played at least one game every year since 1983.

Clemson has won seven in a row in the series including both meetings in 2012. The Tigers won 12-5 at Fluor Field on April 10 and then won 9-2 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium on May 15. The Paladins last win in the series came on March 3, 2009 by a score of 4-2 in 14 innings.

Clemson holds a 77-26-1 lead in games at Clemson and 28-5 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. Jack Leggett is 50-12 all-time against Furman (21-5 at Clemson, 29-7 at Western Carolina) and is 15-4 against the Paladins at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

The Paladins

Furman, led by 20th-year Head Coach Ron Smith, is a member of the Southern Conference. The Paladins are 19-16 on the season, including a 8-7 mark on the road. Furman enters the game after falling in two of three games at Wofford last weekend. The Paladins were picked to finish seventh in the SoCon by league coaches and ninth by the media after coming off a 28-31 (13-17 SoCon) season in 2012.

The Paladins are hitting .281 as a team in 2013 with 64 doubles, four triples, 26 homers, 45 stolen bases (in 70 chances), 124 walks, 37 hit-by-pitches, and 258 strikeouts while averaging 5.7 runs per game. Furman’s pitching staff has a 4.60 ERA this season, allowing 348 hits (.275 opponents’ batting average) and 145 walks against 262 strikeouts in 323.0 innings. The Paladins are fielding at a .955 clip, committing 62 errors in 1319 chances.

The Tigers

Clemson enters the game 26-11 and is on a 10-game winning streak. The Tigers are ranked as high as #12 in the country, by Collegiate Baseball, and is ranked #20 by Baseball America and #22 in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches Poll. The Tigers are 17-7 at Doug Kingsmore Stadium in 2013, including 11-4 against non-conference opponents. Clemson was picked to finish third in the Atlantic Division in 2013 by ACC coaches and is coming off a 35-28 (16-14) season in 2012 that included an appearance in the Columbia Regional.

The Tigers are hitting .278 as a team in 2013 with 58 doubles, nine triples, 13 homers, 59 stolen bases (in 86 chances), 133 walks, 15 hit-by-pitches, and 235 strikeouts while averaging 5.3 runs per game. Clemson’s pitching staff has a 3.15 ERA this season, allowing 327 hits (.256 opponents’ batting average) and 117 walks against 238 strikeouts in 337.0 innings. Furman will start junior righthander Jacques de Gruy. The Dallas, TX native is 0-1 with a 15.43 ERA in three relief appearances for a total of 4.2 innings pitched in 2013. He has allowed 10 hits (.417 opponents’ batting average) and six walks against four strikeouts.

 

Clemson will counter with senior righthander Jonathan Meyer. The San Diego, CA native is 2-0 with a 4.01 ERA in 11 appearances (two starts) for a total of 24.2 innings pitched in 2013. He has allowed 32 hits (.323 opponents’ batting average) and three walks against 21 strikeouts.

 

Worth Noting

  • Clemson is 36-17 all-time on April 17 with a 28-6 mark at home.
  • This is the third of eight meetings against SoCon opponents for the Tigers in 2013. They defeated Wofford 9-2 on March 6 and won at Western Carolina 12-9 last Tuesday. Clemson still has single games with Western Carolina (April 24) and Furman (May 8 at Fluor Field) and hosts Georgia Southern for a three-game series May 10-12.
  • Clemson has faced 10 of the 11 baseball-playing members of the SoCon (Chattanooga does not have a team). The Tigers are 491-159-6 in the previous matchups, including a 166-83-3 mark on the road.
  • Jack Leggett has also faced 10 of the current 11 baseball-playing members of the SoCon and spent nine seasons in the SoCon as the head coach at Western Carolina. He is 232-81 in his previous matchups against SoCon teams, including a 119-28 mark as Clemson’s head coach.
