Football season is officially underway for the Tigers as they prepare for what many hope will be one of the best seasons ever at Clemson. As the season progresses some players will make a move and demand more playing time based on their performance on the field. Others will take a step back.
In this new TCI feature each Sunday we will look at the players moving up and those that are moving down. Which players are elevating their game and their position on the depth chart?
Zac Brooks – Sophomore Zac Brooks put on a show Saturday during the scrimmage rushing 7 times for 79 yards including a long of 44 yards. Brooks has had a good camp so far. The staff has been pleased with the weight he added in the offseason. The key to seeing playing time for Brooks will be his ability to hang onto the ball.
Shaq Lawson – TCI has expected Shaq to make a contribution this year and he isn’t wasting any time. In Saturday’s scrimmage Shaq had six tackles and two sacks. There is not question Shaq will play this season. Don’t be shocked to see him play more than some of the veterans ahead of him in the depth chart.
Tyler Shatley – There is one offensive lineman that is playing with the consistency the staff is looking for every play. That player is Tyler Shatley. Coach Morris said this week Shatley is at a different level this season. The move to offensive line was a great move by the staff last year. Shatley will be a force this season.
Jordan Leggett – True freshman Jordan Leggett continues to move up the depth chart at tight end. Leggett had an outstanding scrimmage Saturday with three catches for 44 yards. Coach Morris said this week that Stanton Seckinger was not looking like the starter at tight end this week. It appears Leggett is making a major move up the depth chart and looks to be the No. 1 pass catching tight end right now.
D.J. Howard – D.J. Howard was seen leaving practice early Friday in a van wearing a green jersey. Howard did not play in Saturday’s scrimmage due to a groin injury. With Howard watching Brooks put on a show Saturday afternoon. Howard has been plagued with injuries his first two seasons. It is critical for him to get back on the field quickly if he he wants to be near the top of the depth chart at running back.
Kellen Jones – As Kellen Jones tries to make a move up the depth chart at linebacker he will have to do it with a cast on his left wrist. Jones will be able to play with the cast, but it will be more difficult to climb past the talented depth ahead of him at linebacker.
