CLEMSON — Here is a look back at Clemson’s 10-2 win over Maine on Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium.

What happened?

The Tigers jumped on Maine starter Scott Heath for four runs in the first inning (after the Black Bears had scored a run of their own in the top of the inning) and nine total runs over the first three innings en route to a series sweep over Maine. Jake Long bounced back from a shaky first outing to earn his first win as a Tiger with 6.0 innings of six hit, two run ball. Garrett Boulware led the hitting attack with three of Clemson’s 12 hits and 10 Tigers collected a hit in the contest, including Steven Duggar who extended his hitting streak to 15 games.

Game-Changing Moment:

The game changing moment Sunday came right off the bat for Clemson as the first three Tiger batters of the game reached base and all came around the score. Clemson would add another run in the inning to give Long a 4-1 cushion that he would never relinquish.

What went right?

Long looked more comfortable in his second start, despite getting off to a shaky start and allowing a run in the first inning. Boulware continued his hot start with a three-hit, three-RBI day. Chris Okey added his team-leading 10th RBI and eight of the nine starters had a hit in the game. Clay Bates looked strong out of the bullpen with three straight strikeouts in his only inning and Patrick Andrews looked like his old self with a solid inning in relief.

What went wrong?

Like Saturday, it is tough to find much wrong in a 10-2 win. With the South Carolina series and ACC play looming, the Tigers will need Long to become a reliable third starter and Sunday looked like a step in the wrong direction. Clemson will need McGibbon to come out of his early season slump, as the senior captain is 1-for-15 (.067) start but does have a .333 on-base percentage (thanks to five walks and a HBP).

They said it.

Clemson Head Coach Jack Leggett

“I am very pleased that we got the sweep. We have good energy and the guys on this team are fun to be around. We played good baseball all weekend, forcing Maine into mistakes and then taking advantage of them. We pitched well, played good defense, and swung the bats all weekend.”

Clemson Redshirt Junior Jake Long

“It felt good to get my first win. It gives me a lot of confidence that the coaches have given me this chance. It was good to get a good start under my belt heading into next weekend.”
