Clemson Associate Athletic Director Bill D’Andrea is the leading candidate to become the new athletic director at The Citadel, sources confirmed to TheClemsonInsider.com.
D’Andrea has been associated with Clemson athletics for almost three decades in a variety of capacities, from assistant football coach to Vickery Hall director to external affairs chief and associate athletic director. He is slated to retire at Clemson on May 30.
Sources confirmed The Citadel’s Board of Visitors is meeting this weekend to discuss the athletic director position. D’Andrea, who tripped to Charleston earlier this week, is considered a high priority in the proceedings.
The status of The Citadel’s current athletic director, Larry Leckonby, is unclear at this time. Details of his contract are currently unavailable, but a source indicated some on the board are dissatisfied with his job performance and may be looking to make a move.
More information should be available after the weekend, when the Board of Visitors meeting concludes. With D’Andrea slated to retire in a little more than a month, a smooth transition would be expected if the decision is made.
