Hoping to get an early start to their college careers, almost all of Clemson’s 2015 commitments will enroll in January. Over the next few weeks, TheClemsonInsider will take an individual look at each player who will arrive next month.
Van Smith
Cornelius – Hough High School (N.C.)
4-Star S (Scout) 4-Star ATH (247) 3-Star S (Rivals)
His Background. Smith became the first 2015 commitment for Clemson when he pulled the trigger during a visit for the 2013 season opener against Georgia. He’s been rock solid with the pledge and will already be on campus when his Hough teammate, four-star cornerback Mark Fields, makes his official visit to Clemson.
Quick Analysis. Listed at 6-foot, 180 pounds, Smith played a variety of positions at West Mecklenburg and Hough, including quarterback, running back, wide receiver, safety and linebacker. Fast, physical, long — Smith could work at safety and nickel during his Clemson career.
This Spring. Robert Smith, a two-year starter, will end his Clemson career in a week, leaving a vacancy behind at safety. T.J. Green and Jadar Johnson have logged plenty of meaningful snaps this season and will compete for time during spring practice. Jeff Gibson, who took a redshirt in 2014, will also be in the mix.
Whether or not Korrin Wiggins figures into the equation remains to be seen. The majority of his playing time over the last two years has been at nickel. If Wiggins makes a full-time move to safety, Smith could be in line for the nickel job. Smith might also add some value as a special teams player. With his size, speed and athleticism, he has a shot to bypass a redshirt first season, particularly if he’s going to play on all four special teams.
