2017 Clemson baseball commitment Bryce Bowen completed his junior season at Elbert County High School (Elberton, Ga.) last month. Bowen, an outfielder, first baseman and left-handed pitcher from Bowman, Ga., was named to the Rawlings-Perfect Game Underclassmen Preseason All-American second team in March.
Bowen, who committed to the Tigers last October, discussed his season, future at Clemson and more with The Clemson Insider:
How was your junior season?
Bowen: “We started out really well as a team, but we ended up dropping the last nine games and dropped out of the playoffs. But I had an all right year. It wasn’t what I hoped for, but it was pretty good. I know my batting average was around .400. I threw pretty well, too. I struggled with command at times, but I threw pretty well.”
Have you talked to any of your fellow Clemson commits lately?
Bowen: “We all have a group message that we talk on about every day. We’re really excited to get there.”
Have you been in touch with Clemson’s coaching staff recently?
Bowen: “They text me a lot. They were trying to come watch me play but just couldn’t ever work it out — they were always playing when we were.”
What has Monte Lee told you about your future role at Clemson and how he sees you fitting in?
Bowen: “They’re thinking I’ll be able to be a two-way guy, and play first and pitch.”
What does Lee like about your game?
Bowen: “Probably my power. I have a good bit of power from the plate, and I have a good arm.”
Have you made it to any games at Clemson this season?
Bowen: “I’ve seen a few of them. I went to the Sunday South Carolina game. I went to the Saturday and Monday FSU games, and I went this past weekend on Saturday against N.C. State. They just never quit.”
Are there any former or current Clemson players you look up to or model your game after?
Bowen: “Definitely Seth Beer since he’s come in and had a monster freshman season. That’s probably what everyone wants to come in and do.”
What are your plans for the summer?
Bowen: “Just going to play with Team Elite out of Atlanta, Ga. I want to work on being a little more selective at the plate.”
What excites you the most about coming to Clemson, and what do you feel like you’ll bring to Clemson as a player?
Bowen: “It’s definitely a great atmosphere, and it’s great to be around. I think I’ll be able to come in and help out right away.”
