Draft experts all over the board with Watson

One NFL Network draft expert has upset the apple cart in Clemson.

Charley Casserly, who helped build the Washington Redskins into a three-time Super Bowl Champion, tweeted on Thursday that North Carolina quarterback Mitch Trubisky was the best quarterback in this year’s draft and Patriots’ backup Jimmy Garrapolo is better than Trubisky.

Caeerly tweeted those words on Thursday after quarterback prospects completed their interviews and conversations with NFL general managers and coaches during the NFL Scouting Combine for Indianapolis, Ind. In other words, Casserly is saying teams that are in need of a quarterback should try and sign Garrapolo before drafting one of the top quarterbacks in the draft, including Clemson’s Deshaun Watson.

Casserly is just one of many experts who have been all over the board when it comes to evaluating Watson. Expert Michael Lombardi says Watson has impressed everyone with his knowledge of the offense, his understanding of coverages and personnel. They are also impressed with his leadership skills, which should not be a surprise considering just five weeks ago Watson led his team on a 9-play, 68-yard drive in the final two minutes to beat Alabama in the national championship game.

Joining Casserly in “the not so impressed” group is his NFL Network Colleague Bucky Brooks who has Watson going No. 23 in his mock draft. However, Watson has impressed Cleveland enough where he is listed as one of four possible No. 1 picks for the Browns, joining Trubisky, Texas A&M defensive end Myles Garrett and Alabama defensive tackle Jonathan Allen.

Watson, who will speak with the media on Friday at the NFL Scouting Combine and will do the field workouts on Saturday, checked in on Thursday at 6-2 ½ and weighed 221 pounds, which was on par with Trubisky, who is 6-2 1/8 and weighs 222 pounds.
