Clemson recruiting: Latest news and notes

The Clemson Insider rounds up the latest recruiting news and notes surrounding the Tigers:

5-star visiting today. Clemmons (N.C.) West Forsyth five-star defensive end and priority Clemson target K.J. Henry is on campus today for the first time since the Louisville game last October.

Because a deep playoff run with his basketball team kept him busy through late February, Henry hasn’t been able to make many trips of late. His lone other visit this year thus far occurred to Georgia on Feb. 18 for its junior day. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney paid Henry a visit at one of his high school games in January.

Clemson and Georgia are two of the top contenders for Henry, who plans to make a decision sometime during or after his senior football season. Alabama and Ohio State are also in the thick of things, while Virginia Tech and South Carolina are in the discussion.

Junior Day visitor returning this weekend. TCI has learned that Covington (Ga.) Newton four-star defensive tackle Darnell Jefferies, who made his first visit to Clemson last weekend for junior day, will be back this weekend. He’ll be accompanied by fellow Covington native and three-star defensive tackle Lamarius Benson.

Jefferies picked up an offer from Clemson during the junior day visit Saturday. The 6-foot-4, 275-pounder visited Georgia Tech, South Carolina, Auburn and Alabama last month. He has held an offer from Georgia Tech, and the rest offered during his visits.

Jefferies also added offers from West Virginia, Louisville, Oregon, Notre Dame and Miami in February to go with others from Colorado State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Tennessee, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. He hasn’t conveyed any leaders or stated a timetable for his decision.

Benson, meanwhile, has offers from Georgia Tech, Maryland and South Carolina among others.

5-star DT down to two. Among those with the IMG Academy (Bradenton, Fla.) tour group that made a stop at Clemson on Saturday were Clemson linebacker commit Mike Jones, five-star defensive end Xavier Thomas, four-star defensive end Stephon Wynn and five-star defensive tackle Taron Vincent.

Vincent, who attended Clemson’s junior day in January, told TCI after that Clemson had moved in as one of his top four schools along with Ohio State, Florida State and Alabama. According to multiple reports, Vincent has narrowed his recruitment down to Ohio State and Florida State, two schools that have long been his frontrunners.

Other tidbits.

** IMG Academy four-star running back T.J. Pledger named Clemson one of his top eight schools on Wednesday night with Georgia, Nebraska, Notre Dome, Oklahoma, Oregon, Tennessee and UCLA. He owns nearly two dozen offers but doesn’t currently have one from Clemson.

** Several Clemson priority targets were at North Carolina for the Tarheels’ junior day last weekend, namely Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland County five-star running back Zamir White, Cary (N.C.) Green Hope four-star receiver Jordyn Adams, Stafford (Va.) North Stafford four-star offensive tackle Nana Asiedu and Tampa (Fla.) Cambridge Christian four-star offensive tackle Richard Gouraige. Adams, Asiedu and Gouraige attended Clemson’s junior day in January.

Butler (Ga.) Taylor County four-star running back Lyn-J Dixon and Big Stone Gap (Va.) Union four-star tight end James Mitchell went to junior day at Tennessee over the weekend.

** Adams received an offer from LSU on Wednesday. Clemson target Myles Sims of Atlanta-Westlake gained an offer from Washington on Tuesday.
